About Maryann

After years of classroom experience at the early childhood level, I became a reading specialist. I then moved to the college level teaching Education students (pre-service teachers) before voluntarily leaving that position to serve as a Literacy Consultant for an international publishing company. In that professional development role, I mentored reading teachers in systems across the country including the states of NJ, FL, MA, and IN. Now fully retired, I have tutored independently since 2014. I presently serve students in-person at the local library as well as online. I earned a BA degree in Elementary Education, MA degree in Elementary Reading, and Ph.D. degree in Educational Studies.

About the class

I believe that assessment informs instruction. I assess in five areas including sight words, phonics, comprehension and fluency and writing. I then design a learning plan based on the results of those assessments. Thus, I tailor my teaching and pinpoint specific areas of weakness. Progress is quick and steady because I waste no time teaching what a student already knows. My focus is on skills that are partially known, that is building on strengths and of course concentrating on what is unknown.
I'm most able to assist students in kindergarten through grade three who are reading below grade level. My online lessons are engaging and child-centered as I use several manipulatives. My intention is that students both advance in reading ability and fall in love with books.

Details

There are a few reasonably price teaching materials and early readers that parents must purchase. Writing is a part of the lesson so you will need to purchase a primary level writing book and other items for this lesson component.
Online (zoom) lessons require a webcam as well as access to a printer.
You will be given login credentials to access the weekly story. You will need printer access to download weekly phonics and comprehension skill sheets that are sent via your email.
