About Ricardo
My name is Ricardo Coertze, and I am an IEB high school graduate looking to help Grade 9 students navigate their Mathematics.
Because I finished school recently, I still remember exactly how it feels to sit in a Grade 9 classroom trying to make sense of new algebraic fractions or physics equations. Throughout high school, I managed to maintain consistent distinctions in STEM, matriculating with 78% for IEB Mathematics and 75% for IEB Physical Science (and 5 distinctions across my remaining subjects).
I have been officially accepted to study Mechanical Engineering at the University of Pretoria (UP) next year. Since I am preparing for a heavy maths and physics degree, I have a strong understanding of foundational concepts, and I am very confident in my ability to explain them clearly.
I am honest about what I can offer: I am not a career school teacher, but I am a high-achieving student who knows exactly how to study for, unpack, and succeed in IEB-style exams. My Methodology & What Makes Me Unique
As an incoming UP Mechanical Engineering student, my approach focuses entirely on conceptual clarity and logical problem-solving over rote memorisation. Because I went through the IEB system myself and achieved consistent distinctions throughout high school, I understand exactly how the curriculum transitions from basic arithmetic to advanced abstract thinking. I don't just teach students how to find the answer; I teach them the framework of how to unpack complex, unseen word problems and data-response questions—skills that are essential for high-level maths and physics.

I am completely fluent and able to conduct my lessons comfortably in English. All technical terminology, worksheets, and exam preparation materials will be delivered in English to match the school assessment standards.
What to Expect from a Typical Lesson
Every 1.5-hour session is highly interactive, structured, and split into three clear phases:
1. The Diagnostic Review (15 mins): We start by reviewing the student's recent homework or test results to target exact gaps in understanding.
2. Concept Breakdown & Live Sketching (45 mins): Using a digital whiteboard, we break down tricky Grade 9 topics (like algebraic fractions, factorisation, chemical balancing, or physics equations) step-by-step.
3. Active Application & Exam Strategy (30 mins): The student takes the reins to solve real exam-style problems under my guidance, learning the exact structural keywords and answering techniques that IEB examiners look for.
Target Students & Learning Levels
My lessons are strictly tailored for Grade 9 students who already possess a functional grasp of the basics but want to elevate their performance ahead of their crucial Grade 10 subject selections. I specifically cater to:
• Average students (50%–70%) who want to break through their academic ceiling, eliminate silly mistakes, and comfortably secure their place in Grade 10 Pure Mathematics and Physical Sciences.
• Top achievers (75%+) who want to push for high distinctions by mastering advanced problem-solving, lateral thinking, and the complex data-response questions typical of competitive academic environments like the IEB.
