About Chloë
Dr. Chloë Sobek is an award-winning composer-performer, improviser and educator based between Naarm/Melbourne and Berlin, with over 20 years of professional experience in music. She holds a PhD in Music Performance and Composition from Monash University and works across contemporary composition, improvisation, electroacoustic music, experimental performance and creative music research.
Chloë’s practice is centered on the violone — a Renaissance precursor to the double bass — which she combines with electronics, field recordings, extended techniques, improvisation and collage-based approaches to sound. Her work spans concert music, noise, electroacoustic practice, musique concrète, experimental improvisation and research-led performance, treating sound as both a material object and a site for artistic inquiry.
Career highlights include being commissioned and curated by David Harrington of the Kronos Quartet, collaborating with Garth Knox of the Arditti Quartet, recording for Relative Pitch Records in New York, and presenting her research at major international conferences including NIME and TENOR. Her debut album Apotropaic was released to critical acclaim, followed by Burning Up with acclaimed saxophonist Tim Berne.
Chloë has received a number of major awards and grants, including the Allan Zavod Performers’ Award, the Monash Jazz and Improvisation Postgraduate Award, the Marten Bequest Scholarship and the RMIT Vice-Chancellor’s Award. She has also received funding from the Australia Council for the Arts, Creative Australia, the City of Melbourne and the Ian Potter Cultural Trust, and was a double bass scholarship student at the Australian National Academy of Music.
She has been described as “an artist that is thinking deeply about how to aestheticize what’s on everyone’s mind; to use art to drive engagement with ideas whilst pushing the boundaries of technique and technicality.” — Kieran Ruffles, 4ZZZ

I offer individual online lessons in composition, experimental instrumental practice, improvisation and creative musicianship. My teaching is designed for students seeking a rigorous yet highly personalized learning environment; one that supports technical development, artistic clarity and the cultivation of an individual voice.
As a composer, performer and academic, I work with each student in a way that responds to their specific goals, abilities, interests and artistic direction. Lessons are tailored rather than standardized and may include work in technique, repertoire, improvisation, composition, critical listening and broader creative development.
I see teaching as a form of mentorship as much as instruction. Rather than offering a fixed method, I aim to create a structured but flexible framework in which each student can extend their practice, expand their musical thinking, refine their compositional and improvisational processes and develop confidence in their own creative direction.
Depending on the student, lessons may focus on:
- compositional development
- experimental and extended instrumental practice
- improvisation
- repertoire and interpretive work
- listening practices and critical reflection
- building a sustainable independent practice
Lessons are suited to students, emerging artists and dedicated practitioners who want thoughtful, high-level guidance in contemporary, experimental and creative music practice. They may be particularly useful for those seeking one-to-one support in developing their artistic voice, creative ideas, compositional practice or experimental approach to performance.

I was incredibly lucky to have Chloë as my mentor during my last year studying Composition and Music Technology at university. Chloë created a comfortable space where I could bring my half baked ideas (or, lack thereof) that, with her mentorship, grew into my best works to date; music I feel proud of! Chloë would direct my learning by finding specific musical techniques and research, breaking down these ideas to my level of understanding and finding helpful connections between these techniques and my own aspirations. Chloë would demonstrate how I could apply these methods to accomplish and/or strengthen my ideas, and would be receptive to my thoughts - allowing me to always feel heard and valued. Chloë would also guide my practice by challenging me to do my best work, including by providing feedback - which was consistently delivered in a respectful and constructive manner. As confirmed by my and my peers experiences, Chloë curated engaging lessons that benefited the individuals' learning intentions and musical goals - whilst allowing us all to feel supported along the way. This made Chloë an exceptionally adaptable teacher who was able to build rapport with students across the board - as she showed excellence in varied scenarios. Even those of us with the weirdest ideas turned in high quality work that reflected personal artistic integrity - Chloë does not shy away from the unique, she manages to embrace this and make it amazing. I know many personally (including myself) who already miss having lessons with Chloë, and I would wholeheartedly recommend her, from beginners, to emerging artists and particularly to those looking to find and refine their sound!
Thank you so much Chloë - I wouldn't have survived my final year without you.Chloë is an inspiring educator. She approaches each and every session with the patience and open-mindedness necessary to explore and make sense of seemingly abstract concepts, while maintaining a structured process to ensure these concepts reach their desired, tangible manifestation. Her guidance has helped me restore the confidence and creative fortitude in my own endeavours.
Chloë helped me complete my final composition last year. I really enjoyed the lessons we had together as she is really knowledgable, patient, and encouraging when it comes to music theory and composition! Her teaching helped me improve my confidence, refine my music, and think about music in a much deeper way.
Chloë was one of the most important teachers I had during my undergraduate studies in composition and music technology. I studied with her for a couple years, including individual mentoring that culminated in my thesis.
What always stood out was how seriously and thoughtfully she engaged with any idea I brought to her. She created an incredibly collaborative learning environment where I genuinely felt she was on the student’s side creatively and intellectually. Her knowledge of experimental and electronic music is immense, but what made her teaching so valuable was her ability to make complex ideas feel clear and workable, in other words streamlining :) . Her feedback was always insightful, I would wholeheartedly recommend her to anyone interested in composition, electronic music, or developing a stronger artistic practice.Chloë is a warm and encouraging teacher with extensive music experience across composition and improvisation. I learned so much from our lessons and found her teaching to be practical and engaging. Beyond that, Chloë helped me develop new confidence and skills, and I have enjoyed continuing to implement what I learned from her in my music practice. Highly recommend!
As the Principal of a senior college Chloë provided individual lessons for some of my students. She was absolutely reliable, took great pains to get to know the specific needs of each student and was genuinely interested in helping each one become confident and successful. Highly recommended!
