About Emma
I am a London-based gallery founder and art historian, with a BA and MA in History of Art from the Courtauld Institute of Art. During my undergraduate studies, my particular areas of focus included Caravaggio and his followers, as well as French Impressionism. For my MA, I focused on the development of the post-war art world; with particular emphasis on the influx of European artists to New York and the consequential shift of the centre of the international art world from Paris to New York. My MA thesis explored the work of Cy Twombly and his relationship to Surrealism through the lens of his paintings of 'Leda and The Swan'.
Alongside my academic studies, I have spent almost a decade working in Mayfair and blue-chip galleries, travelling to international art fairs, working closely with artists, collectors and a wide range of artworks. I have recently founded a small gallery with a colleague, where we are developing our programme and I work with artists and artworks daily.
My academic and professional experience has given me a broad knowledge of art history, but also a strong emphasis on looking closely at artworks, developing visual analysis and constructing clear and persuasive arguments. I particularly enjoy helping students develop their own ideas and confidence, whether they are preparing for an exam, working on a specific essay or considering studying History of Art at university.

My approach is tailored to each student's level, course, exam board (where necessary), and individual needs. Having studied History of Art at both BA and MA level at the Courtauld Institute of Art, and subsequently spent almost a decade working in leading blue-chip and Mayfair galleries, I combine academic training with practical experience of looking at and discussing art professionally.
With a particular focus on helping students develop the skills that are essential to succeeding in History of Art: visual analysis, critical thinking, contextual understanding and clear, well-structured writing. I can help students learn how to look closely at an artwork, identify what is visually significant, develop an interpretation and then turn those observations into a convincing academic argument, utilising other sources.
For essay-based work, I can help students with everything from understanding a question and developing an initial thesis, to structuring an essay, selecting relevant evidence and refining their written argument.
Lessons will be tailored very closely to the student's particular course and requirements. For example, we can work through a specific exam-board topic, prepare for an upcoming essay or examination, analyse a particular group of works, or practise answering a particular type of question.
I am also happy to work directly with a student's existing essays and coursework so that we can identify areas for improvement and develop a targeted approach.
I can support students preparing for GCSE, A-Level and IB History of Art, as well as those studying the subject at undergraduate level or considering applying to university to study History of Art or a related humanities subject.
I also offer support with university applications, personal statements and interview preparation, particularly for students applying to History of Art and other humanities subjects. This can include developing ideas from the student's own academic interests and reading, strengthening written applications, and practising how to discuss artworks and ideas confidently in an interview.
Lessons are typically 50-60 minutes, although sessions can be tailored where appropriate.
My aim is ultimately to give students the confidence and correct repertoire to look carefully, think independently and communicate their ideas clearly.
