About Luke

I’m Luke, and I particularly like teaching the student who says, “I know things on guitar, but I don’t feel like I understand the guitar.” That is a very different problem from being a complete beginner. You probably do not need someone to hand you another scale diagram. You need someone to show you why the chord you already know, the scale you already know, and the song you already play are actually related.

I am quite systematic about that. When we introduce a theory idea, I want you to find it on the instrument immediately. When we learn a shape, I want you to know what the important notes inside that shape are. When we analyze a song, I want the analysis to change something about the way you play it. If the theory does not help your fingers, your ears, or your musical decisions, we have not finished translating it yet.

This is probably a good fit if you have ever thought, “I don’t need another YouTube lesson—I need somebody to tell me what all of these lessons are supposed to add up to.” That is the kind of guitar student I enjoy working with. We take what looks like a pile of disconnected information and gradually turn it into a map.

If you have learned guitar from videos, tabs, chord diagrams, and random scale exercises, there is a good chance you know more than you can actually use. You may know a pentatonic shape but not know which notes inside it matter. You may know twelve chords but freeze when somebody asks you to change the key. You may be able to play a riff perfectly but have no idea what to play when the backing track continues. My first job is not necessarily to give you more information. It is to connect the information you already have. The reference profiles repeatedly identify this exact kind of student: self-taught players who have accumulated scales, songs, and techniques but do not know what to focus on next.

One technique we may use is one key, one position, one song. Instead of learning five new scale shapes, we take one section of the fretboard and make you useful inside it. You locate the chord tones. You play the progression there. You create a small melody there. Then you improvise using only three or four notes rather than racing through the entire scale. Once those notes begin sounding intentional, we expand the area. This is how the fretboard gradually stops looking like dozens of unrelated patterns and starts looking like one connected musical system. Fretboard clarity, rhythm, voicings, practical improvisation, and applied theory are also recurring priorities in the guitar examples from the PDF.

Rhythm will be treated just as seriously as lead playing. If your chords are correct but the song still does not sound convincing, we may temporarily remove most of the chords and work with only one. Then we focus on the right hand: which subdivisions are being played, which are being skipped, where the accents sit, and whether your hand continues moving through the spaces. Once the rhythm works on one chord, we restore the progression. This separates a chord-changing problem from a rhythm problem instead of practicing both badly at the same time.

When we improvise, I will not tell you to “just play the scale.” We will give your solo a job. Maybe your only objective for one round is to land on a chord tone every time the harmony changes. The next round might use only short two-note phrases with deliberate silence between them. Another may begin every phrase on a different part of the beat. These limitations sound restrictive, but they are often what finally make improvisation feel musical. You stop searching for more notes and start making decisions with the notes you already know.
