About Cameron
Playing the fiddle has opened so many doors for me creatively, socially, and professionally and I'd love to share my passion for the instrument with you! I began playing the fiddle at the age of 4, inspired by mother's side of family, who are incredible Scottish folk musicians from the Orkney Isles of Scotland. I started learning the fiddle with the Suzuki method of teaching; a pedagogical approach to classical violin that encourages learners to learn by ear rather than by reading music. I am a great believer in this approach as it gets learners connecting to music on a deeper and more intuitive level. Throughout school I played in many orchestras and ensembles and achieved grade 8 distinction in the violin in my last year of school. It was after school that I began to connect more to folk music. I enjoyed being able to connect to my Scottish cultural heritage through the music, as well as having more freedom and creative licence to find my own style of playing. In 2019 I completed a 2-year postgraduate degree in Scottish Music at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. I learnt a huge amount, being surrounded by some of the most talented fiddle players and teachers in Scotland. This time gave me a discipline and rigour for the instrument, as well as equipping me with many teaching insights that I still draw upon today with my students. After the RCS I began a professional musical career as a fiddle player and composer. I have been lucky enough to have had several international tours of Japan in 2019 and 2021 with harp player Riko Matsuoka as well as several Creative Scotland funded tours of Scotland playing the fiddle in different bands and folk collaborations. Over my time as a professional musician, I have balanced my time gigging with teaching. I now have over 8 years experience teaching a mix of adult and younger learners in group and individual settings. It is a joy for me to get to teach all ages and stages, and watch students grow in confidence on their instruments as the lessons go on!

My teaching approach... I take a friendly and open-minded approach to lessons, tailoring them around what the student's wants and needs are. I believe playing and practising should be an enjoyable process. For me, a connection to the music is where everything begins. Once students learn to enjoy and connect to the music, the process of working hard to improve on their instruments gets a lot easier and becomes a very rewarding experience! In my teaching approach I draw upon the strengths of my classical training as well as my traditional Scottish Music training at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. I combine a solid foundation of classical technique with what I see as the joy of Scottish traditional music: finding your own unique style and way of playing that is intuitive to you!

Perfect! Cameron is a patient, supportive and highly knowledgeable tutor. I am really enjoying our lessons and look forward to continuing my fiddle playing with his guidance. Highly recommended!
Perfect! Lessons with Cameron have been fantastic so far - he is clearly very passionate about the fiddle and has really helped boost my confidence with experimenting with different bowing techniques and ornaments. He is very knowledgeable, patient and just a really nice guy. I often get nervous playing in front of people but for some reason I feel very relaxed playing in front of Cameron which speaks volumes for his laid back approach to lessons. Couldn't recommend him enough really!

When I first met Cameron Newell at a folk-music session, the quality of his playing immediately stood out. Cameron can take any tune and make it sound album-worthy. I soon asked him for tutoring; and after a year in, my fiddle playing has improved immeasurably.
Not only a fantastic musician, Cameron is fantastic troubleshooter. He could surgically pinpoint the problems with my bowing and give careful, friendly instruction on how to rectify these. I am still incorporating his exercises into my everyday usage. The techniques provided have given me more confidence, and helped me leave the skill plateau
I was trapped in.
Unlike several teachers I've had in the past, Cameron does not bash tune after tune. Cameron is emphatic on getting to know tunes, and on modifying your style to fit the music's intent. I enjoy workshopping my current repertoire, bring many tunes beyond just the 'session-ready' state. I especially appreciate being able to "jump into" Cameron's pool of knowledge and learn aspects of fiddling outside the usual tutelage, such as: chopping, harmony, and variations on melody.
I would very-much recommend Cameron to intermediate learners, looking to bring their playing to the next level. As well as Cameron’s beautiful qualities as a player, his step by step approach, patience and sensitivity are helping me progress to the next level. He is a generous, effective teacher, and I enjoy every one of his lessons.
