About Simon

I am a concert pianist who has played all over the world. I had some serious challenges in the beginning of my journey, and I am ecstatic to share with my students how to overcome those challenges. Each student gets a personalized treatment, and in each lesson I try to get inside the student’s head to figure out what is holding them back.

Understandably, most people feel somewhat lost looking for a piano teacher. Almost every instructor claims to have studied with a famous teacher, many have performed in various parts of the world, and some may be acquainted with a few musical celebrities. All mention their broad experience in teaching. How can a person tell if a teacher is worth working with?

I have, of course, been a student myself, and have made some good decisions, and some bad ones, regarding the choice of a teacher, and I know what makes the difference. My goal is to help every student significantly improve their musical facility and enjoyment. It is important to me that students don’t lose the hope of becoming excellent, not just OK, when it comes to playing piano. This is not to say I want all my students to have a music career, but I want them to feel content and satisfied when they play for themselves and others.

Here is how I am different from other teachers:

- I have performed solo, with orchestras, and as an accompanist on three different continents. Even though my career was on an upward trajectory, I decided to settle in Philadelphia and for some time to focus on building a sense of permanence where I live. I would be the first person to say “Those who can - do, those who can’t - teach”. I try to make sure that I myself grow continually as a musician in a broad sense of the word. In a nutshell, you will be dealing with someone who actually makes music, rather than theorizes about how to make it.

- Every teacher says that they have an individual approach to every student. I am sure this is true, yet the question is how far a teacher is willing to go in this customization. With my students, if a particular method is not working, we will try every possible technique or approach available until we succeed. As long as a student puts time into practice on a regular basis, I will constantly be working on maximizing the efficiency of both the repertoire and theory aspects of every lesson, to make sure we progress. You will be working with someone who can teach the basic as well as the most advanced piano repertoire that exists.

-  A student might falsely assume the teacher’s level doesn’t matter in the beginning of their studies. The difference, however, is in knowing not just how something is usually done but rather WHY it is done this way. This is crucial if one wants to have a deep understanding of the piano performance, even in the very beginning. With my students I try to go deep, but make it easy in the end. Music playing should be fun, but you can’t make it fun if the progress is superficial.

-  I have studied in three different countries, and at very famous institutions (Moscow Conservatory, Yale School of Music, Frankfurt Musik Hochschule). This allows me to have a broad perspective on piano playing and pedagogy.

- Last but not least, I only started to play piano seriously when I was 14. Everyone knows it is hard to start late, and I had a lot of challenges to overcome. A lot of famous teachers are former prodigies who didn’t have to struggle to play the instrument, and they are frankly unsure how to approach some problems. My own experience allows me to creatively find solutions to whatever difficult problems may be encountered, and conquer them!

I am sure I can make a difference for you as well!

  • 1) When did you first develop a passion for music and your favorite instrument?

I started playing piano when I was seven. It was totally my idea, and my parents never forced me to do it. However, I was quickly disillusioned with it: the music I was given to play was boring, and most of the teaching I went though at my early age was not particularly inspiring. It all changed when I developed a personal interest in pop music when I was 12. I played around with jazz only to discover that my true passion was classical music.
  • 2) Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

There are a few different composers to whose music I come back to all the time. I few I would name are Maurice Ravel, J. Coltrane, and L.V. Beethoven
  • 3) Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

I only teach piano, and it is different with every student. I enjoy finding a way that works the best for a particular student.
  • 4) What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

I only play piano, so I can't say much about other instruments. But I could make a good bet piano wins in this contest given we are the only instrument where we have to control multiple lines of music, be sensitive to touch, and take care of the pedaling.
  • 5) What are your keys to success?

Practicing is important, however, being able to identify the problem in the most concrete way is even more important. Being analytical is paramount. But being too analytical and not using your intuition is not what we want too. Finding a sweet spot between knowing intellectually what to do and following your gut instinct is the key,
  • 6) Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

I would be very interested to ask great musicians from the past what they think about contemporary composition. And vice versa - I would love to chat with Coltrane about older music.
  • 7) Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

    Pass on that question
  • 8) What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I am a performer myself, so I have a direct knowledge of what it takes to be comfortable in stage. Also, as I mentioned earlier, I started being serious about music somewhat late, which means I had to overcome a lot of challenges on my path. Now, I am happy to help my students to overcome those challenges.
