About Gesufrancesco

After graduating from DAMS (Disciplines of Arts, Music and Entertainment) in Italy, I started traveling, studying and working abroad in countries such as Turkey, Mexico and the United Kingdom.

Later I earned a Master's Degree in Cinema, Television and Multimedia Production, continued my research studies in Film History, and cultivated my passion for teaching.

I have attended and collaborated with major universities such as Roma Tre University in Rome, Kadir Has Üniversitesi in Istanbul and Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México in Mexico City.

I am currently continuing my studies with a Ph.D. in Radio, Television, and Cinema at İstanbul Üniversitesi in Istanbul.

INTRODUCTION:
Education is changing and with it, teaching is also being revolutionized together with cinema itself, an interesting means of communication as it is always in constant evolution. The history of cinema has the ability to make us travel in time and space with images, a primordial source capable of reminding us of the past, showing us the present and imagining the future.

A TYPICAL LECTURE:
My lessons will be interactive as I am of the idea that a teacher must always know how to listen to the ideas of others by building a path together where everyone can express their opinions. With the help of a series of theoretical-critical contributions of reference, the main steps that have marked the consolidation of cinema as an art, language and industry will be reviewed.
First, there will always be a small introduction to the “language of the film” followed by the various themes that will be discussed together. Based on the lesson, the various topics will be dealt with primarily considering the geographical, historical and cultural aspects. The main themes can be The invention and the early years of cinema; The international expansion of cinema; National cinemas, Hollywood classicism and the First World War; France, Germany and Soviet cinema in the 1920s; The last season of the silent; The introduction of sound and the Hollywood studio system; Cinema and totalitarian countries such as the USSR, Germany and Italy; France and poetic realism; American and European cinema after the war; Italy and neorealism; Cinema as art and the idea of an author; The Nouvelles Vagues and the new cinema; The fall and rebirth of Hollywood; Europe and the USSR from the seventies onwards; A developing world and cinema from the seventies to today; Global cinema and digital technology. In addition, we can explore other aspects concerning the history of the documentary, animated cinema, series B movies and even films released in cinemas in the last 20 years.

TEACHING TECHNIQUES:
Based on the topic to be discussed, it will always be suggested to watch one or more films before each lesson to be able to discuss them together. The lesson will be held through the presentation of slides and the viewing of short parts of the main films of the historical period under analysis.

WHAT MAKES ME STAND OUT AS A TEACHER:
I am a nice and easy-going teacher; rest assured that I do not ask questions, the only thing I will ask will be only the vision of certain films that are crucial for the film history. My research studies focus on Other cinemas from countries considered to be developing such as Mexican cinema and Turkish cinema. I can do the lessons in English and Spanish as well as in Italian.

WHO ARE MY LESSONS FOR:
My lessons are aimed at anyone interested in knowing or deepening their skills in film history. There is no age limit or a specific level of education required, in fact, all those interested in the cinema field could enrol both for pure passion and for preparation for exams. Finally, I assure you that as soon as you start the lessons you will realize that your film knowledge, even if minimal, will be essential.

  • Da dove nasce la tua passione per la materia che insegni e per le lezioni private?

    La mia passione nasce dai miei studi in ambito cinematografico effettuati all'università e da allora ho deciso di dare anche lezioni private per far conoscere a tutti questo ambito storiografico. Inoltre insegnare per me è una passione che sto cercando di coltivare per una futura cattedra all'università.
  • Quali sono le tematiche che preferisci trattare con gli allievi? E quali sono quelle che ti piacciono meno?

    Le tematiche che tratto con i miei allievi sono principalmente di storia del cinema, ma mi piace anche affrontare il contesto storico, culturale e geografico. Le tematiche che mi piacciono di meno sono quelle incentrate sugli altri ambiti che di solito entrando in contatto con i miei insegnamenti quali la televisione e il web.
  • Quali sono i tuoi modelli o punti di riferimento? C'è stato un insegnante o un'opera in particolare che ti hanno segnato e ispirato?

    Beh sia gli insegnanti che ho avuto il piacere di conoscere negli anni, ma anche varie opere mi hanno ispirato in questo settore in particolare l'opera di Roberto Rossellini Roma città aperta del 1945 un ponte tra la storia e il cinema.
  • Quali sono, secondo te, le qualità necessarie per essere un buon insegnante o un esperto nel tuo dominio?

    Per essere un buon insegnante bisogna saper ascoltare sempre i propri alunni e dare importanza ai loro punti di vista che possono rendere interattiva e costruttiva qualsiasi tipo di lezione.
  • Raccontaci un aneddoto divertente o particolare relativo alla tua formazione o ad una esperienza di lezione!

    Beh di aneddoti divertenti ce ne sono tanti ma quello che mi ha fatto più ridere è stata la visione di un film chiamato Intollerance di David Wark Griffith del 1916 un trauma di 3 ore e 30 minuti che ho subito a lezione durante i miei anni di studio e ne riscontro la sofferenza anche nei miei alunni quando ne suggerisco la visione a casa.
  • Rassicuraci, anche tu, come tutti noi, hai riscontrato qualche difficoltà a scuola.. ?

    Difficoltà più o meno direi di no, anche se il problema principale è dato dal fatto che gli insegnati spesso non ti ascoltano e si concentrano solo su quello che devono dire senza valutare l'importanza del loro impatto sugli alunni. Anche io come tanti ho trovato professori che hanno inalzato dei muri dinanzi a me senza nemmeno conoscermi.
  • Quali sono le tue passioni, oltre alla materia che insegni?

    Ho altre passioni quali lo yoga, le serie tv, imparare nuove lingue e soprattutto viaggiare.
  • Cosa ti rende un grande Superprof (oltre al fatto di aver risposto a questa intervista :-P)?

    Beh il fatto che sono una persona divertente in grado di interagire con qualsiasi tipo di studente. Mi piace che gli alunni si sentano a proprio agio durante le lezioni e non si sentano forzati a fare qualcosa.
