It’ll be a real pleasure to try to describe the special experience of studying cello for two full years with Azure Kline. Finding that a lesson of one hour was over in a wink, we would work for two hours each week. Every lesson seemed to be imbued with magic! This, I’d say, was a combination of her personality’s magic and her ability to explain the many subtleties of cello playing, both in cello technique and in musical interpretation.
Azure was able to clearly reveal the didactic and the musical issues involved in each passage encountered. I can imagine that her past few years of teaching music to children in both regular and in special education classes in groups and singly, would contribute a lot to understanding the needs of cello students at the beginners’ level.
On the other hand, for an initially intermediate student like myself, one of the most exciting parts of studying with Azure was the productive dialogue she constructed. She enabled me to appreciate so many aspects of playing, especially about the possibilities in the use of the bow. She transformed my musical experience and ability to play in ways that were barely imaginable in the past!
Azure has a beautiful way of revealing the mutual relationships between the rationale of musical phrasing and the technical solutions needed to achieve it.
For example, her instructions for creating the smooth bowing of string transitions, seemingly a matter of pure technique, were amazing, as her suggestions guided my hands into connecting the notes. In this holistic way, the musical phrase acquired direction and the technical difficulty faded!
And one more tiny illustration of how her teaching is so special: When playing a scale with eight notes on one bow, at the end of explaining how to feel each note in its turn on the bow (as opposed to simply moving the bow back and forth!), she came out with the loveliest phrase, “.....and all these little sixteenth notes are actually all these little pearls along the bow!” And they did come alive for me at that moment, just as in so many other precious moments.
Azure’s extremely professional and unique way of teaching is entrancing!
