About James
Hi, I'm James.
I think maths is a thing of great beauty, and find it unfortunate that so many have the opposite experience at school. I hope to change that for a few people. Physics is more obviously fun, but getting one's head round the basic concepts is difficult, and one often needs to see things from a few different perspectives.
I studied at Cambridge, specialising in maths and theoretical physics; I later worked as a senior software engineer, and have now returned to study for a master's in theoretical physics.
Exam technique is mentioned by a lot of parents and students. Practicing exam questions is important, but focusing exclusively on it can be soul-destroying for both student and teacher. I find it's better to start with how to communicate and justify one's ideas, in both speaking and writing. This naturally leads to clearer exam answers.
I am prepared to help all levels of students make progress, whether already high-performing or struggling.

The free sample lesson would start with a discussion of the student's current position and goals; I would then suggest we go over some material brought by the student, sent before the lesson if possible. This could be notes from class, exercises or an exam question.
It's important for me to understand how my students think, so I can tailor my explanations. I try to ensure the student is contributing as many ideas as possible, and adjust the pace of the lesson if they're getting lost or bored.
Intuition is important in maths. Too often it can seem like a lot of arbitrary nonsense, with no purpose. Part of my job is to present things in a new way and build on any intuition the student already has, pointing out links between topics that don't seem related on the surface. I will also point out real-world applications, to make it clear why we're studying things.
