About Alvin
I am an award-winning professional conductor, pianist and educator based in New York City, with an international career spanning the United States, Europe and Asia. I have worked with leading orchestras and musicians including the Sarasota Orchestra, Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Hong Kong Philharmonic, and have been mentored by conductors including Riccardo Muti, Bernard Haitink and Sir Antonio Pappano.
I hold a Doctor of Music in Orchestral Conducting from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, with a doctoral minor in Music Theory. As a pianist, I received the Licentiate of Trinity College London (LTCL) in Piano Performance with Distinction and continued my piano studies with Edmund Battersby at Indiana University. I also teach conducting as faculty of the Opera Conducting Institute in New York City.
Despite my professional background, I believe lessons should be welcoming, patient and encouraging. I enjoy working with students who are curious about music—whether a developing young musician, an ambitious high-school student, a conductor preparing for an audition, or an adult returning to the piano after many years.
My aim is to bring the same seriousness, curiosity and attention to detail that I value in professional music-making into a supportive environment where each student can develop at their own pace and discover a deeper connection with music.

My teaching is patient, individualized and grounded in the belief that lasting progress comes from understanding both what to practise and how to practise. I encourage curiosity: asking why the music works as it does, listening critically, and developing the tools to solve musical and technical problems independently.
Lessons take a well-rounded approach to musicianship, connecting technique with listening, interpretation, theory, historical and stylistic understanding, and effective practice methods. Rather than applying a single method to every student, I adapt lessons to each student’s experience, learning style, repertoire and goals.
For piano students, lessons focus on technique, sound, phrasing, voicing, pedaling and interpretation, while harmony, form and analysis are integrated naturally into repertoire study. Particular attention is given to developing effective practice habits so that students learn how to work independently between lessons. I teach primarily intermediate and advanced students, including school-age pianists, adults returning to the instrument, and students preparing for ABRSM, Trinity, NYSSMA, auditions and performances.
For conducting students, study combines physical technique, score study, interpretation and rehearsal strategy. Lessons may cover orchestral and opera repertoire, audition preparation, and the practical relationship between musical intention, gesture and sound.
For music theory students, lessons can include harmony, analysis, ear training and musicianship, as well as preparation for AP Music Theory, ABRSM/Trinity examinations and conservatory or pre-college study.
What sets my teaching apart is the breadth of perspective I bring as a professional conductor, pianist and academically trained musician. I hold a Doctor of Music in Orchestral Conducting from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, with a doctoral minor in Music Theory. I received the Licentiate of Trinity College London (LTCL) in Piano Performance with Distinction and continued my piano studies with Edmund Battersby at Indiana University.
My goal is not simply to help students prepare the next piece, examination or audition, but to develop curiosity, effective ways of practising, independent musical judgment and a deeper understanding of music that they can carry into everything they play.
