About Maria
While I am currently in the final write-up phase of my PhD in Psychology, with a focus on behavioural and cognitive neuroscience, I have simultaneously been working as an associate lecturer of Psychology at Goldsmiths, University of London since September 2016. During this time, I have gained substantial experience in teaching undergraduate Psychology modules, including topics pertaining to cognitive psychology, biopsychology, social psychology, and developmental psychology. My experience as an associate lecturer included adapting module materials on my own initiative to effectively teach them in lectures and tutorials, and setting assessments related to the materials, such as essays, lab reports, and presentations, as well as completing all related administrative tasks (e.g. attendance monitoring and assessment records). Being in an institution that had to adhere to University of London standards, assessment and feedback/marking deadlines were to be taken strictly, regardless of the large work load. I pride myself in delivering feedback, not only on time, but as extensively and informatively as possible, as I regard feedback as one of the key sources of student progress, as is transparency and tolerance. Moreover, I am aware of the importance of an interactive learning experience and always promote argument formulation and discussions during tutorials, and ensure all students give presentations for a topic of their choice, encouraging them to equally showcase their potential in a secure environment. This also derives from my advocacy for team work and social facilitation in a learning and work environment, both for myself and my students.
Similarly, I am invested in ensuring that my students are comfortable with the use of e-learning and the Goldsmiths’ equivalent of the “Blackboard” platform, named the Virtual Learning Environment. Merging my knowledge and teaching experience, I was able to display my efforts through assessments and teaching observations involved in my PG Cert in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education, including developing a new e-learning essay/report plan writing tool that can be peer assessed. I received positive feedback by my observers and assessors, and also received positive comments in my departmental feedback given by my students and individual module coordinators during the end of year module review process.
Further to this, I have experience in supervising postgraduate projects and training postgraduate students in an EEG lab. I co-supervised a student project as part completion of an MSc in Clinical and Cognitive Neuroscience, which involved collecting resting state EEG oscillatory data.

My teaching philosophy is all about engaging with my students in a way that develops critical thinking while using empirical data to inform their knowledge of psychology as a science. I take pride in making all students feel confident in knowing that they are capable of achieving their full potential and gaining the knowledge and skills needed to excel in their future careers. Instead of giving the student the answer, I think that it is important to support and reinforce learning strategies that can be applied independently in the future, ensuring maximum retention of semantic information.
Much of the lesson structure involves active discussions and argument formulation in order to understand the 'why' and 'how', not just the 'what'. This can revolve around topics the student may not be fully confident in, essay/thesis/report topics ( including structure and content), as well as statistical and methodological methods of experiments.
