I have known Xingyu since our first year in University. We were in a particularly difficult algebra and formal proof course and we were all studying together in the residence commons one night. Someone who was studying the same course, but alone, was struggling with a particularly abstract concept, and asked to join our group for some added insight. Xingyu taught him the concept in great detail and with deceptive simplicity that didn't compromise the completeness of the concept, even I felt my own understanding increased from overhearing Xingyu's explanation. but that wasn't it: we found out later that the other student had been struggling a lot and planned on dropping the course, and now, he had decided to stay in the course. The course was a degree requirement and a prerequisite to many of the upper level courses, so this meant that if he had dropped the course, he would essentially have had to switch programs.
