Driving safely is the trick. Getting home is the treat - Anonymous

Driving in Chennai is governed by rules and regulations set by the State Transport Authority and the standard laws that apply to driving in India. You have to pass a formal driving test under the supervision of an instructor and only then can you be permitted to drive on your own. The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways is the apex body within the Government of India that formulates and administers rules, regulations, and laws that relate to road transport, and driving on national highways. It also invests in research so as to increase mobility and efficiency of the road transport system in the country.

You are already aware that traffic in India moves on the left. And while laws are set in place to ensure minimum accidents and road rash, it is desirable that some of these be enforced by the local traffic guard. Driving lessons can come in handy if you are trying to get up to speed with the changing rules around driving in India. Most Indian cities have provisions in place to identify motorists who have been convicted of certain traffic offences. Four wheeler driving classes can teach you about these and a lot more.

Did you know? India has the second largest road network in the world after the United States!

New Motor Vehicle Rules in India

Your grammar lessons should include rule exceptions
Whether you are driving in Chennai or London, you have to abide by traffic rules.

Your driving school will teach you about all the important road safety rules that you need to follow while driving. Good driving instructors go the extra mile to teach you about changes in these rules so you are not flouting any.

There has been a fresh set of changes in the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988 that came into effect from October, 2020. The recent changes cater to online monitoring procedures so as to improve traffic law enforcement.

Comparison Between Old & New Traffic Rules

1. Physical Documents

As opposed to the old rule that mandated you to always carry important registration documents at all times, you can now save these records online in a digital format.

2. License Revocation

Your license can now be suspended immediately just by referring to the online records. Earlier, the traffic guard had to wait for this information to arrive in the physical form before taking any action.

3. Data Storage

All information on disqualified licenses are now stored online and not in physical files.

4. Issue of Challans

Now, violating drivers will receive e-challans issued through an online platform.

5. Use of Mobile Phones

The amended rule specifies that you may only use a hands-free device for navigation purposes as against a complete ban on the use of mobile phones earlier.

Tamil Nadu as a state has not fully adopted the new directives under the Motor Vehicles Act as discussed above. The center has increased the penalties for anyone violating traffic rules. But Chennai is still reviewing the same and is yet to make a decision about a possible hike.

The Chennai traffic police, however, had started implementing the new penalties despite any clear directives from the State. The exact penalty rates are yet to be decided and Chennai traffic fines remain unchanged as of now. So, if you are driving in Chennai, be careful about ambiguous fines being imposed by the traffic police.
