Calcutta is beautiful. Wherever you place a camera, you get a vision - Pradeep Sarkar
A similar thing can be said about driving in Kolkata. It is quite relaxed and enjoyable most of the times. It is nothing like the long traffic jams in Mumbai or Bangalore, nor is it highly efficient like Chennai. Kolkata's traffic has a life of its own much like the city itself. You can drive your kids in your own car to school without having to worry about getting caught in rush hour traffic. You do, however, need to be calculative. While it's mostly enjoyable to drive around in Kolkata, there is rush hour traffic and ongoing construction work that may add to traffic woes at times.
So, the first thing to do is to sign up for a good driving class and get the guidance of good driving instructors. This will help you get a grip on clever driving techniques and pass your driving test with flying colors.
How Good is Driving in Kolkata?
Kolkata has been hailed as a city that manages road traffic most efficiently in India. If you take your driving lessons seriously, you will understand how Kolkata's traffic and its management has evolved over the course of time. The city has the highest density of vehicles per KM amongst all Indian metros. But its vehicular traffic is quite fast thanks to an efficient traffic management system.
According to Kolkata Police statistics, the city has a density of 814.8 vehicles, followed by Mumbai at 766 and Chennai at 616.On the flip side, Delhi tops the list of must number of vehicles plying on the roads with its vehicle population at 44 lakhs, while that of Kolkata at 11.44.lakhs. The density is higher in Kolkata due to narrower and shorter roads compared to cities like Delhi or Chennai.
How Frequent Are Road Accidents in Kolkata?
At any given time, a driver in Calcutta is found to be safer than any other city in India. This is reflected in the statistics published by authorities. A recent report declared Delhi as the accident capital of India, while car and bike accidents were much less in Kolkata.
One of the prime reasons for accidents in the city is the traffic management of slow-moving vehicles like hand-pulled rickshaws. Although the state government banned these rickshaws and hand-drawn carts, they still continue to ply in the older parts of the city along with motorized vehicles.
Your driving instructor should teach you how to navigate such congested roads and slow-moving traffic. These are skills you don't learn in a driving manual and they will be put to test again and again if you are driving around in North Kolkata.

This will help you get into defensive driving if there are danger signs raised. If you can anticipate upcoming hurdles or dangers on your way, you will automatically get into defensive mode to prevent any mishaps.
2. Basic Driving Skills
A good driver isn't just about using all the controls properly, but one who can use them smoothly and efficiently. As part of your driving course, your instructor will teach you the nuances of how to become a safe and efficient driver and not just fast and stylish. Learn how to brake in time and control your urge to accelerate on a freeway. This will prevent many accidents in future.
3. The Right Attitude

But good driving instructors will always teach you about how to keep the right attitude while driving. This includes knowing the basic driving etiquettes including towards pedestrians, the right of way, respecting the traffic guard, etc.
An often overlooked part of driving lessons is the theory and reading the manual properly. Yes, driving is all about practical exposure. But it has to be substantiated by a solid knowledge of the laws, rules, etiquettes, signals, etc. You can pass your license test with a flying colors but you would still be a bad driver if you don't have theses basic information at the back of your hand.
