On April 17, 1981, Margaret Thatcher, the then-prime minister of the United Kingdom, laid the cornerstone for what was erstwhile known as the "Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's Institute for Master of Management Studies." The 17th of April is now recognized as SPJIMR Day each year. The institute welcomed its first batch of students for the Master of Management Studies, or MMS, program in the same year. SPJIMR became an autonomous body in 1992, cutting its link with the University of Mumbai.
