Facts About the Test
IELTS was one of the pioneers of English language testing over 21 years ago and continues to set the standard for English language testing today. It is jointly managed by the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, the British Council, and IDP Education Pvt. Ltd. The 4 sectional tests are held for 2 hours and 45 minutes. The duration of each are as follows:
- Listening - 40 mins
- Reading - 60 mins
- Writing - 60 mins
- Speaking - 11 to 14 mins
The Reading, Writing, and Listening sections are held back to back on the same day. The speaking test can be taken on any day of the week just before or after the test. IELTS on Paper and IELTS on Computer are the two ways by which the test can be taken.

You can choose whichever mode you find convenient. The pen and paper tests are held up to 4 times a week, while the computer-based test is held three times on all 7 days of the week.
IELTS results are reported on a 1-9 band scoring system. For each test, you will get a band score. 9 is the highest band while 1 is the lowest. The overall band score is the average of the 4 sectional scores. The results will be valid for a period of two years.
If you are a higher education aspirant, applying to a university in Canada for instance, make sure to know the minimum IELTS score that they require to consider an applicant eligible. When you set your target score for IELTS make sure you aim for a high band score. This will improve your chances of getting admission.

This section lasts approximately 30 minutes. 4 audio records in increasing difficulty are played. Each of these could be either dialogue or a monologue. The audios are played only once, and the questions for each section must be answered while listening, though students are given time to double-check their answers.
This exam lasts 60 minutes. Students are given either an Academic Reading or a General Training Reading test based on what they have opted for. Both tests are divided into three sections, with the sections increasing in complexity.
This test is also 60 minutes long. Students must complete two writing tasks that require distinctly different writing styles. There are no options for question topics. Task 2 is more difficult than task 1 and requires more time.
This is a one-on-one interview with a properly qualified examiner. This session runs for 11 to 14 minutes. The interview is taped and divided into three parts:
- An introduction and interview
- A one to two-minute talk to be delivered by the candidate on a specific topic
- A two-way conversation thematically related to the topic spoken on in the second task

Ways to Improve your Performance
If you are wondering how to get a 9 band score, then there is no easy way of doing it. Daily practice is the only way to get there. You should book the IELTS exam only when you feel confident about your preparation. Here are some suggestions that you can follow to ensure that you are well-prepared for the IELTS test.
Build Your Core English Skills
While solving mock tests will help you to grow familiar with the test format, it will not necessarily improve your skills. Each mock test will contain a different set of questions, solving which won't add to your skill development. The test is skill-based, not knowledge-based. So you will also need to work on your reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.
Although familiarity with the test format is half the battle, don’t underestimate the need to develop your language skills. So, find a good English teacher, take an English course and immerse yourself in the language through books, newspapers, music, and movies.
Self Assessment is Important
When you solve practice tests, take your time to figure out where you are going wrong. Are they mostly grammatical errors or spelling mistakes? Through self-analysis, you will be able to identify your weakness. Accordingly, you can work on improving yourself in that area.
Work on Structuring your Essays
To properly execute your essay writing task in the test, you need to develop your writing skills. Practice how to structure an essay, paragraph by paragraph. Getting your thoughts on paper while sticking to the word limit is not easy. So go through sample papers, look up essay topics and write sample responses. The more practice you get writing responses to different IELTS essay questions, the more comfortable you will feel with various topics.
Use English in Your Daily Conversations
While conversing with your friend, use English consciously. This will improve your fluency. In the Speaking test, you will need to introduce yourself in one of your tasks. So, you can prepare for that part. But the other task will need you to talk on a topic that will be given on the spot. So as a regular exercise try to talk about different topics to improve your speaking skills.

Finally, learn the test tips and strategies and apply them to practice tests. This will help you learn how to manage your time and use it effectively to complete each section of the test. The key to success in the IELTS comes down to time management. So, without further ado, get going with your preparation.
