If you are an aspiring lawyer in India and one of those candidates preparing for one or more of the competitive law exams, then this article is for you. There are a few competitive law exams in India that you should be aware of as an aspiring student of law. AILET or All India Law Entrance Test is the national-level exam conducted by the National Law University (NLU), Delhi once every year. The AILET exam is a very important entrance test for those of you aspiring to become successful lawyers in your careers. The fact that it is exclusive to the Delhi NLU makes it all the more significant and probably a little intimidating. But there is no reason to worry. The fact is that like any other examination, in AILET too you have to answer some questions, get good marks and be well-versed with the application and admission process. And of course, you should start with understanding your eligibility for the courses (llb or llm or PhD) covered under the AILET.

Important Criteria for AILET

Eligibility for LLB Course

  • The aspirants must have passed their Class XII board exams or equivalent with a minimum score of 50%.
  • Candidates who are taking the qualifying test can also apply for the AILET exam.

Eligibility for LLM Course

  • Candidates must hold an llb degree with minimum 55% marks scored in the final exam.
  • Students who are about to take their final llb exam are also eligible to apply for the llm course under AILET.

Eligibility for PhD. Course

  • Candidates with a recognized LLM degree from any university can apply.
  • The marks obtained in the final llm exam should be at least 55%.

OR

  • Candidates who have completed their degree in legal studies along with an M.Phil. in Social Sciences from any recognized university can apply.
  • Aspirants should have scored at least 55% in their last exam.

OR

  • Candidates who already hold a PhD in any other discipline along with a law degree.

OR

  • Lawyers who have acted as a Judge in any State High Court for a minimum of three years or at the Supreme Court of India.

AILET Admission Process, AILET Admit Card, AILET Form

The five-step application and admission process of the AILET is pretty simple and straightforward.

Step 1: Online Registration

Candidates simply need to visit the official NLU Delhi website to register for the AILET exam. You will find the application form along with other details regarding document submission, fee payment and selection of exam center. There is no need to download the AILET form. You can submit it online.

Step 2: Issue of AILET Admit Card

On successful online registration, the university will issue the AILET admit card to candidates. The card mentions important details about your center, exam dates, etc. You need to carry this on the day of the exam.

Step 3: The AILET Exam

Needless to say that you have to appear for the examination on the date and at the allotted center as outlined in the AILET admit card. Candidates need to report to their exam center at least an hour prior to the start of the exam.

Step 4: AILET Exam Results

Usually the AILET results are declared within a month of the exam by NLU Delhi. Your score card will detail out your All India Rank, marks for each section and the overall scores.

Step 5: Counselling for Admission

On the basis of the all-India rank list, NLU Delhi will conduct counselling of qualifying candidates to verify their eligibility for the different law courses.

A Brief Analysis of AILET 2020

AILET 2020 was conducted online for the first time in its history on account of the Covid-19 pandemic, on September 26, 2020. The exam was considered somewhat tough given the range of questions and marks obtained. Generally, the difficulty level of AILET exam maybe ranked as moderate to high, with the only relatively easier section being the General Knowledge segment.

NLU Delhi conducted AILET 2020 exam on September 26. According to the test-takers and experts, the exam was somewhat tough. AILET was held in a computer-based test mode for the first time due to COVID.

The difficulty level of most of the AILET exam sections ranged from Moderate to High. The only section which was easy to attempt was the General Knowledge section.

Candidates must refer to the current year's AILET syllabus to prepare for the exam because it is revised every year by the university.

AILET 2021 LLB Syllabus

  1. English: The student will have to answer questions in English grammar and vocabulary. Additionally, you will be assess on your interpretation and analyzing skills through comprehension.
  2. Legal Aptitude: Since it is an entrance exam for a legal course, you have to be assessed in areas of research, interest in law and problem-solving.
  3. Reasoning: In this section, your logical and analytical skills will be tested. Topics like blood relations, rectifying illogical arguments, and syllogism are used to prepare questions for this section.
  4. Elementary Mathematics: Questions in this section are drawn from 10th standard Math.
  5. General Knowledge: This section covers topics like current affairs, Geography, Economics, and History.

AILET 2021 LLM Syllabus

  1. Jurisprudence: Understand the legal systems, legal reasoning and institutions and their roles in society.
  2. Law of Contracts: Understand how agreements between different parties work related to a service, activity, or a product.
  3. Law of Torts: A tort is an act or omission which may amount to a civil wrong.
  4. Intellectual Property Law: Learn the rules to secure and enforce legal rights to inventions and designs of products and services.
  5. Criminal Law: As a lawyer, your job is to deal with crimes and criminals and to support the police force in bringing justice.
  6. International Law: Learn how rules and agreements work between different nations.
  7. Family Law: Understand the nuances of legal rights in marriages, domestic relations, child custody, and juvenile laws.
  8. Property Law: This is the law related to ownership and tenancy in personal and real property.
