"I sometimes think there is nothing so delightful as drawing." - Vincent van Gogh

To learn how to draw realistically, it makes sense to draw real things.

Drawing from a model will help you to draw people, flowers, or animals with the right perspectives.

The Best Tutorials for Learning to Draw Realistic Flowers

When you first start drawing, even a flower can seem difficult. However, drawing a flower is one of the easiest things to start with.

There are tutorials for learning how to draw lilies, tulips, daffodils, and roses.

Here are a couple of places online where you can learn how to draw:

  • Super Coloring
  • YouTube

There are plenty of different types of plants and flowers you can learn to draw with the tutorials on Super Coloring including water lilies, irises, hibiscus flowers, maple leaves, four-leaf clovers, sunflowers, bamboo, cherries, and cherry blossoms.

Most of the tutorials include 7 or 8 steps and are great for doing sketches of flowers and plants. Don’t hesitate to erase any of the parts you get wrong; we’ve all been there!

Flowers are good for learning the basics of drawing, too. Here’s a nice tutorial on how to draw a tulip.

To get better at drawing, you can move onto increasingly complicated drawings with YouTube tutorials.

If you’re keen, you could get drawing lessons or tutorials. Just search “flower drawing tutorials” or “how to draw flowers” into the search bar and you’re bound to be met with thousands of results for tutorials on drawing tulips, daffodils, lilies, etc.

How to Draw Realistic Animals

When it comes to drawing, you should learn how to draw animals. Whether it’s pets or wild animals in the savannah, some are quite easy to draw and others can be really difficult.

Drawing a cat, lion, tiger, shark, rabbit, or tiger might be a little simpler than drawing a portrait of a man or woman.

It’s never been easier to learn how to draw. To learn how to draw animals (cats, tigers, lions, dogs, rabbits, horses, etc.), you can plan out your drawing using basic geometric shapes such as a rectangle for the body and a circle for the head.

To draw a cat, for example, you can measure everything relative to the length of the cat’s head: 3 heads for length the body, 3 heads from the top of the head to its paws, 3 heads for its tail, 1 head for its hips, and 2 for the length of its legs.

If you’re doing it this way, start with the head. Then you can outline the spine, the sides, the legs, then the fur and/or mane. You can do this when drawing cats, lions, tigers, and even horses. One of the trickier parts of drawing an animal is getting its fur, skin, or scales right with pencils and colours.

Tigers, which are both ferocious and kind of cute, can be difficult to draw: you can use crosshatching to create the patterns in its fur, for example.

How to Realistically Draw a Man

Just like drawing a woman, a grid will help you draw a man.

The upper body

Start with the upper body, the top of the head, the outline of the neck, two vertical lines for the shoulders (broader than on a woman) at three times the width of the head.

  • Start with the head as we’ll use its proportions to dictate the proportions of every other body part.
  • Draw the torso as a triangular shape to the height of the bellybutton.
  • You can use two straight downward lines to sketch out the stomach.
  • You can draw the pectoral muscles as curves that turn upwards towards the sternum; these will vary depending on how muscular your subject is.
  • Draw the abs as three parallel lines with the last one just above the pubis.

To draw the arms, you need to be familiar with each muscle and its shape, particularly the bicep. You can draw arms as three arcs of a circle:

  • Down to the height of the bellybutton for the elbow.
  • Down to the height of the genitals for the wrist.
  • Halfway down the thighs for the ends of the fingers.
  • Curved lines are better for muscular forms.

The Lower Body

The lower body includes the legs.

  • Draw two lines 3/4 down the length of the thighs from the hips.
  • From 3/4 down the thigh, the adductor muscles reach their vanishing point.

Being able to draw men accurately requires a good knowledge of the male anatomy.

Pay particular attention to the size of their shins and calves. Drawing the face is one of the most important parts since drawing eyes, noses, hair, and ears can be a little more technical.

The eyebrows, for example, are usually thicker than that of a woman. On the other hand, men’s eyes are usually less prominent than that of a woman. Similarly, men have a stronger jawline and you need to use shading on the chin and cheeks.

You can also use a rubber to create shadows.

How to Realistically Draw a Woman

We’ve saved the best until last. We have to apologise to our female readers for putting women at the end of the article, but we’ve had to save the most difficult techniques until last.

Would you like to draw nudes or clothed women? How can you draw a woman, girlfriend, wife, actress, or celebrity realistically?

You need to think of the shapes of curves of the female body.

The Upper Body

Here’s how to draw the basic outline of a woman’s body. You can’t draw the human body without knowledge of drawing, anatomy, geometry, lighting, and shadows. Let’s start with a sketch that follows the following rules:

  • The hips are wider than the shoulders.
  • The whole body is generally 7 heads high.
  • From the top of the head to the bottom of the chest is about two heads.
  • Three heads to the bellybutton.
  • Four heads to the genitals.
  • Seven heads to the bottom of the feet.

These are the general proportions of the female body.

Start by sketching the head and the neck and making construction lines for the first four head lengths. The shoulders rest on two horizontal lines and women’s shoulders are generally curved.

The chest, which is about 3 and a half heads in length and extends from the bottom of the neck, and includes the belly button, breasts, and nipples.

At the bottom, draw an oval for the stomach; the size will depend on the model’s body type.

The arms in a relaxed position will reach from the shoulders to the middle of the thighs with the elbows the same height as the belly button and the wrists at the same height as the genitals.

To draw them, you can draw curved lines as a guide.

The Lower Body

You can draw two vertical lines from the hips to the floor as a guide for the legs.

Halfway between the floor and the genitals are the knees. When drawing the female form, much like with the breasts, the hips, buttocks, and thighs are generally ampler than those of a man.

The legs shouldn’t measure more than the length of 3.5 heads.

Next let’s move onto the calves, thighs, and shins. For a standing woman, you need to ensure that the calf on the inside of the leg is lower than the outside. Depending on the angle, you’ll have to pay particular attention to the face.
