Mind on the drive. Hands on the wheel. Eyes on the road - Anonymous

Driving classes can offer many benefits including getting you help with obtaining a driving license. In India, any individual wanting to drive one or more types of motor vehicles, has to have a learner's license first. This makes you eligible to learn to drive - whether under the guidance of a driving school or independently. Basically, it is a permit for you to learn driving. Hence, a very important first step.

Once you have dedicated the required time for training using a learner's license, you have to appear for a test in the presence of an RTO (Regional Transport Office) representative, authorized to give the test. This is the final test to acquire a formal driving license. Upon proper examination, the authority will declare whether you have passed the test or not. Depending on the outcome of this test, you will be issued a driving license or be asked to appear for another round of test. In this light, the role of driving lessons and driving instructors become very critical.

Driving Test

A driving license is an official document issued by the Transport Department, Government of India. It works as a permit for individuals to drive a motorized vehicle - car, bus, truck, two-wheeler, three-wheeler, etc. - on a public road, without needing supervision from an instructor or trainer. The license is also a reflection of you being a trained and professional driver, one who has completed the required driving courses to pass the final test. In India, the concerned department for issuing the driving license is called the RTO (Regional Transport Office) or RTA (Regional Transport Authority). According to the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, you are not allowed to drive any type of motor vehicle on a public road without this piece of document. The RTA usually issues licenses through one or more driving schools, spread across different areas of the country.

Types of Driving License in India

There can be more than one type of driving license or DL in India. This primarily depends on the type of vehicle you are going to drive using this permit. 5. Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) including small cars.
  6. Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) for non-transport purposes.
  7. Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) for commercial purposes.
  8. Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs) with All India Driving Permits - trucks, open licensed cars, etc.
  9. Heavy Goods Motor Vehicles
