Pre-Primary School Teacher

If you are someone who would love the experience of spending time working around toddlers and teaching them in their growing years, then apply for a teaching job in a Kindergarten or Montessori school. Pre-primary school teachers, who work with 3-5-year-olds, are the first contact children have with the real world, outside of the home.

Pre-primary school teachers play an essential role in helping kids study and learn the most basic concepts that will be fundamental to their educational experience. Elementary concepts, such as alphabets, numbers, and basic moral lessons (right or wrong) are usually introduced at this level.

Becoming a Pre-Primary Teacher

To apply for a pre-primary teacher job, you have to spend time pursuing either of the two courses, viz., Nursery Teacher Training (NTT) for 1 year, or Diploma in Early Childhood Education (D.E.C.Ed.) for 2 years after class 12.

Primary or Secondary School Teacher

The Level of Teaching

Whether you choose to go digital with online teaching tools, like video lessons, or discover new methods to uplift conventional teaching, determining the level of learning that you want to adhere to is the first step towards deciding whether you want to devote time to primary school.

A primary school teacher teaches grades 1 to 8 (ages 6-14). Secondary schools include students in the 9th and 10th grades (ages 14-16), while senior secondary schools teach students in the 11th and 12th grades (ages 16-18).

Apply for a course based on the age group that you find most appealing. However, the higher you go in the education level, the higher level of skills and resources you need to make your lessons more relevant and interesting to those who need help. Higher classes require more specialized courses and learning tools.

Determining the Subject to Teach

This is obviously a very critical decision to make. The subject of teaching will depend on the course you have specialized in, such as English, Hindi, or Maths, during your graduation (or higher education).

  • Primary school subjects may include reading, writing, arithmetic, social science, science, and English.
  • Secondary school subjects may include Hindi, English, foreign languages, math, science and technology, history, geography, civics, art, physical education, and health. Vocational training courses and lessons in music might also be offered.

Teacher Training and Education Degree

To be able to teach primary school, you will need a minimum of a Diploma (D.Ted.). To apply for secondary school, you’ll need a minimum of a Bachelor’s (B.Ed.). A Master’s (M.Ed.) is usually only required for specialized subjects or in higher education, like colleges and universities.

Private or Public Schools?

Private schools usually have more openings for a job throughout the academic calendar. So, it is easier to apply for teaching jobs there. Moreover, private schools ask for fewer qualifications than government-run schools, which are more closely regulated.

Public schools lay down more stringent criteria for job applications, including specific eligibility testing and teacher education. However, such schools may offer a better salary and greater rewards for your time there, by way of career advancement opportunities.

Clear a Qualifying Exam

State and national eligibility testing regulate teacher recruitment in primary and secondary schools in India. Clearing the Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) is a prerequisite for teaching in a government-owned school and some private institutions. The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) is the regulatory body that determines the minimum eligibility requirements for teachers each year.

Senior Secondary School Teacher

Also known as PGTs (Post-Graduate Teachers), these teachers pursue more in-depth teaching methods in a particular subject. They teach students of classes 11 and 12.

Senior Secondary school teachers are often required to explore and implement new teaching methods, organize workshops/seminars for their students, grade tests, as well as prepare interesting resources for their students. They also communicate the progress of students to their respective parents.

To teach a course at this level of education, a post-graduation degree in a teaching subject (non-professional, degree courses) and a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree are necessary prerequisites.

Special Educator

As a special educator in special schools, a teacher's job is to engage with children with physical, emotional, and mental challenges and learning disabilities.

A special educator must work closely with the families of their students to achieve the best educational outcomes for them.

Some of the basic job requirements of a special educator include teaching students basic life and social skills for personality development and explaining academic concepts through personalized face to face sessions. To become a special educator, you need to pursue a Bachelor’s in Education (B.Ed.), specializing in Special Education.

Lecturer/ Professor

In India, lecturers, in a college or university, are variously known as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor. In this capacity, you will be expected to devote time to lecturing students on specific courses, conduct simultaneous academic research, and guide students in their own research work.

To be able to apply for a lecturer position in a college or university, upon completion of your Master’s degree, you must qualify for the UGC-NET examination. This National Eligibility Test (NET), conducted twice every year, determines the eligibility of Indian Nationals for Assistant Professorship or Junior Research Fellowship.

Online Tutoring Jobs

In today's technology-driven world, online teaching sites and learning platforms are changing the way we teach and learn. With the increasing availability of digital resources and learning tools, teachers have more avenues to make their careers last for a longer time.

At the very least, you should decide whether you’d prefer a rural or urban teaching situation.

Online teaching is convenient as it offers the flexibility of time, place, and pay packages. You are the master of your daily schedule! While it is easy to find teaching jobs online, here are a few things to consider while creating a tutor profile on an online teaching platform.

Determine a Location

India’s geographical area is huge! The world of online learning offers you the flexibility of teaching from any location in the country. For example, you may be a teacher offering online classes from Mumbai to students in Kolkata.

How Many Hours Every Day/ Every Week?

The courses you design and teach online will vary according to the level and subject. Therefore, determine, beforehand, how much time you would want to devote to each lesson. For example, a math lesson for class 12 might take a bit more time than a TEFL class. One way of settling on the duration is to offer a trial class to check the student's learning capacity.

Level of Instruction

Put in a lot of thought into the age groups and level of the learning experience in students that you are about to address. For courses at higher levels of education or in more niche subjects, you will likely need specific credentials first, such as certificates and licenses. You can also explore the teaching resources and support offered by each program.

Teaching Skills and Attributes

The profession of teaching is often looked upon as an easy one. The common perception is that you need to know your subject, understand the lesson plan, and make it interesting for kids. However, this is not a sufficient job description for a teacher.

The teaching profession is a highly-specialized field, and requires comprehensive training to gain expertise in the field.

To become a teacher, one must combine the attributes of patience, confidence, liking for and an understanding of children/ students, as well as classroom management skills. Teachers must know how to organize easily, offer friendly and helpful advice without coming across as condescending, and possess management and communication skills not only for students but also for their parents.

Essentially then, a teacher is a combination of a friend, philosopher, and guide to students. A teacher is a role model in society to take the initiative of directing young minds in the right direction.
