Every year, India sees a growing number of teachers walking away from their job. The main culprit seems to be the heavy workloads, while many teachers in private schools and colleges also begrudging the unfair compensation rates for teachers in India. However, the decision to quit teaching also brings with it uncertainty, a lack of job security,  and the students you have loved and nurtured. Many highly capable teachers are unsure of how to make the best use of their skills and how to stay true to their personal values and professional ethics.

Teaching can be an enormously rewarding and attractive career, but it’s not for everyone.

There is no need to despair, however, as teachers have very marketable skills and experience that are in high demand in the job market. On top of their knowledge about student learning and development, most teachers have great communication and presentation skills, high levels of creativity, and lots of experience in dealing with difficult situations. So, if you are someone out to find jobs after teaching, there are some exciting options outside of the classroom that can do with your expertise. What's more! You don't even have to train for another career after teaching as these roles are such that your educational background would be an asset.

Top 5 Career Alternatives for Teachers

1. Museum Educator

Museums put in a lot of effort to make the experiences of visitors more interactive and meaningful, as far as learning goes. Museums use sophisticated techniques to engage their visitors, provide fun activities for young learners, lectures for the more interested and matured audience, as well as digital and audio content.

For former teachers who want to create fun learning environments in a setting that is not the classroom, this could be an ideal career move. Bring your subject matter expertise, which you have spent year after year, honing and improving, to aid innovative learning and audience engagement. You could still be in touch with school education as you encourage them to visit the museum and by developing teaching resources.

2. Education Liaison Officer

If you are someone who still feels passionately about the role of a teacher but not interested in classroom teaching, you can still slip into an administrative role that lets you work behind the scenes. Get involved in the recruitment and training of new teachers for schools and educational organizations, such as Byju's or Gandhi Fellowship. You could also become a recruitment consultant for schools and help them organize teaching placements. Your educational background could prove to be a real asset in helping bridge the gap between schools, higher education officers, and prospective teachers and educationists.

3. Educational Resource Supplier Consultant

In India, there are now many education-related companies, including educational software companies, those selling curriculum resources, IT and furniture suppliers, facilities management, training courses, and so on, that view schools as their target market. As a former teacher, you could join their ranks, and add valuable insight into their sales process, or help with their marketing and develop new products and services.

4. Private Teaching/ Tutoring Jobs

If You cannot imagine yourself doing anything in life apart from teaching, but are feeling bogged down by the classroom setting, then private tuition or home tutoring will offer you an alternative environment to pursue your passion. Whether you conduct your private lessons on a one-to-one basis, in small groups, or even online, via Skype or Google Meet, as a private tutor, you could provide more individual-centric learning and achieve the work-life balance that is often missing in a school setting. You could even set up your own freelance tutoring business or consider an educational franchise, where you can manage and run your own independent learning school or a tuition center.

5. Corporate Learning and Development Consultant

Use your understanding of how people learn to good effect in a corporate environment. Learning and development in a corporate set-up can include such tasks as in-house induction and training courses, e-learning, coaching, and mentoring. Corporate consultants are also free to work freelance as a trainer delivering niche courses or as a member of the in-house team tasked with eh assessment of training needs for the organization or creating learning resources.

Work on Improving Your CV

Retraining for a new career isn’t always a technical process – it can rest heavily on personal preparation and redefining yourself as a professional to help you understand which career profiles would suit you best. A huge part of this process is looking back at your previous experiences, and at your current role, and start thinking about how you would fit in with the career you wish to move into.

Appealing to employers and selling yourself for a new job role all starts with your CV.

Start by breaking down your CV section by section. Look at your skills – how can you transfer these to the target career role? As a teacher, you will have all sorts of important skills and qualities that will fit well into many careers, such as communication, interpersonal and organization skills.

Set the Ball Rolling

Take a look at yourself in terms of character and employability. Think about what you really want to achieve out of your professional life. Consider your qualifications and skills - where do they fit in? Do you really need a relevant training course to improve your chances of getting into the alternative career that you are interested in?

Apart from carrying out skills assessment, you could also speak to a local careers counselor to gain a broader perspective on the choices you have from where you’re currently standing. Interact with friends, family, and colleagues to get an idea about the requirements of different careers.

You can also keep an eye on the job market, in general, and look for patterns or anything promising that you feel your skillset might work with. Think about the logistics of different careers too: what possible training might you need? What salary and living conditions will this offer you? Is there scope for career development? What kind of daily activity will it entail?

Make sure you have done all the necessary research before you make your career transition from teaching. Depending on your particular skills, expertise, and experience, there are likely to be many career alternatives for you. It is not necessary that you will be able to step into your new role right away - some of them might require you to get additional qualifications. This only proves that, if you ever decide to leave your teaching career behind, your years there and your skills would not be wasted!
