Once you have talent photography is going to come naturally to you. But something that can take more time to learn is how to wield your camera and get it to do your bidding. A talented photographer will see what they are wanting to capture, but the camera may not always be willing to acquiesce to your request as readily as you might hope.

It is then advisable to learn about photography especially if you are serious about creating the best photograph with your camera. There are lots of ways to learn photography, and they all come at different price ranges. But no matter what your budget is there is a course of study for you that will make it easier for you to capture that winning image.

What You Need To Know To Start

To start as a photographer you just need a good eye for something that is worth capturing. It could be a classic landscape or a photoshoot with models. But you should be able to capture these images in a way that can tell a story. Taking beautiful images is the dream of many photographers, in truth, not all of the images you photograph will be winners, but the more you learn and practice the better they will become. Until one day, you will understand how to create great photos that succeed in storytelling.

There is no predefined path to become a photographer, it doesn’t even really take experience. You don’t need to know the history of photography to be a great photographer. But technical skills, knowledge and great equipment are all essential in how to photograph that winning image.

Equipment You Need To Start

The essential things that you need to get started are a great camera, a suitable lens, and some memory cards. Once you have these items, you will be ready to begin your journey to becoming a better photographer

How To Take Better Photos? Learn New Skills

Best Way To Self-Study – Cost: Free

There are a lot of price ranges available when wanting to study photography, but none can be more alluring than ‘free’. There are lots of ways to become a better photographer without spending another penny. But self-study took dedication, commitment and a seriously motivated attitude.

Self Study Photography Tips

The first way that you can improve and is advisable despite which form of study you take. Is to practice, practice, practice. Practising is invaluable, learning about your camera equipment, learning about you’re own style and how you use your new camera. Will help you to become passionate about and learn photography in a fun and visual way.

When practising, however, it is essential that you either print your images or look at them via your PC. When examining the images look for great things in the image, things that you can replicate and also look for things that you could improve on.

Photographic Books

Now I said this was free so I won’t tell you to go to a bookshop or to buy books in some other place. But you know of course that purchasing book is a distinct and useful possibility. Instead, we will go to the library where you will be able to borrow free books on any topic.

If you have an up to date library, you may even find a manual for your particular camera model which can guide you clearly in how to use it.

When borrowing or buying books you want to make sure that they cover Lenses, photography techniques such as the rule of thirds, long exposures, ISO, Shutter speed, Aperture, depth of field and how to best use a Digital camera.

No matter if you have a particular interest such as wedding photography, photojournalism, food photography, nature photography, travel photography or commercial photography and even Photoshop or Lightroom software for editing your photos for example. You should be able to find books on photography of all kinds in the library covering these specific topics.

Videos can give you a hands-on look at how to use your specific camera, different photography techniques, skills and much more. This watch and learn approach is a great way to learn and should be implemented into all forms of study to help raise your confidence and support your learning experience.

Private Tutoring – Cost: Moderate To Expensive

Private tutoring is one of the best ways to learn photography if you find that you are not disciplined enough to follow the self-study route in your own time. Although tutoring comes at a cost, it is a great way to ensure your progress towards becoming a photographer.

There are lots of online tutors or photography schools where you can find a tutor teaching photography out there that would be glad for your business. But before you hire a tutor to try to care about what it is that you want to achieve from your study of photography. The cost will vary significantly if you just want guidance on the basic

Online Photography Course

Online tutoring is much cheaper than hiring a tutor face to face and shares some of the same benefits as studying photography offline. Having an online tutor will be a great learning experience as you will have more freedom to explore in your own time and also to study anywhere you want to in the world. As long as you have a wifi ready device and an internet connection you will be prepared for your lesson.

Online private tutoring is a great way to get support yourself with your challenges, and although the person won’t is there with you physically. You will be able to get personalised support which will advance your learning forward quickly. A bonus is that one to one tutoring online is much cheaper than one to one tutoring face to face and they share many of the same benefits.

Offline Photography Course

The wonderful thing about offline classes is that you can go to photography workshops if you choose group tutoring. There you can meet other photographers’ starting out or refreshing their knowledge. In your photography class, you could learn photography basics, how to run a photography business, photography composition, lighting techniques and much more.

If you prefer to have a private lesson while the cost will go up you won’t be disappointed, your tutor can go out with you on shoots and train you first hand in how to get better photographs, how to understand the techniques required for the output you desire. They will groom your talent until you grasp the concepts being taught.

While group classes would have a structured curriculum with a hands-on private approach tutoring would be dictated by you, and you could gain support where it is needed

Photography 101: Professional Education – Cost: Expensive

Fundamental University Courses: From Amateur To Professional

If you are interested in learning advanced photography on the road to being a classically trained professional photographer, then you could be interested in taking an academic course at a university or photography school. Taking a university course in photography, you will learn everything there is know about photography.

From the basics of photography to studio photography, how to use a wide variety of accessories such as tripods, light meters, interchangeable camera lens etc. You will study top photographers, the history of photography, how to creatively compose a scene to get the best photo and all about post-processing of you pictures with software like adobe lightroom and adobe photoshop.

If you are lucky, you might even have the chance to use a classic film SLR and develop the images in the dark room.

The great thing about photography training at university is that it is a comprehensive and complete education. You would have had the change to complete many photography assessments, try different accessories, technology, cameras and shooting styles. The university is also likely to teach you how to make a business of your craft.

But the downsides are degrees take 3 years and costs a lot! Think deposit on a small house expensive rather than the top of the line camera expensive. You could probably buy 25 top of the line cameras for what your university course will cost you.  It’s something to think about.

Assistant To A Photographer Or Supporting  A Photography Studio

If you find that you want to study but would like to begin working with photography straight away. Then you could search for jobs as a photographers assistant or for employment within a photography studio. You may not get paid much unless you have lots of experience, but the trade-off is that you would get trained on the job.

Working with a professional photographer is likely to give you not only the free education that you need but also give you a behind-the-scenes look at the world of being a professional photographer. If they are nice and have some space-time, they may even be willing to train you if not you may have to offer payment for them to give you some support with your more individual photography needs.

They would need you to be efficient, so they would need to teach you about most things anyway, like lenses, filters, cameras and about composition. Because you would be supporting them with all of these things, you will get the practice you need and also get to see the results of bringing these tools together.

But of course, if you want them to help you understand your camera or to give you personal advice that is up to them personally to decide if they will exchange that service for free or a fee. Top tip finds a generous photographer who has time to give you some support for your own professional development. You can present your intention during the interview.

There are lots of ways to learn photography, just one google search will avail you with millions of results. But before you decide to study, try to think about what it is that you want to learn and what will you invest to further your education. Also are you motivated to follow a structured photography course curriculum or do you prefer more flexibility?

Photography knowledge and technical skills can change the results of an ok picture into an award-winning image. But the art of photography and the expression you choose is down to you.

Happy snapping!
