About Kylar

I am a native Korean speaker. I majored in Teaching Korean as a Foreign Language and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at Kyungdong University in 2012. After graduating from university, I have taught students from various countries through volunteer work in language education for multicultural families and lecture experience at academies. I am good at grasping the strengths and weaknesses of all students and I can make your weaknesses your strength. All students are welcome.

There will be classes where you can learn Korean the easiest and fastest way. I will provide materials that match students’ characteristics and levels, and will give students many opportunities to participate and practice in class. Regarding Hangul classes or beginner classes, pronunciation and reading skills will be focused on. For example, you will learn and practice expressions necessary for everyday life such as introducing yourself, reading menus, and ordering in restaurants and cafes, etc. As for intermediate classes, there will be grammar and conversation classes. Materials are books, practice papers, and problem discussions. Learn the expressions that Korean native speakers actually use and expand your choice of words.

  • Did you grow up speaking this language? Or were you inspired by a trip abroad, an individual or a certain aspect of the culture? I was born in Seoul, the capital of Korea and I have spoken Korean all my life.

I was born in Seoul, the capital of Korea and I have spoken Korean all my life.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

"If the people prosper, how can the king not prosper with them? And if the people do not prosper, how may the king prosper without them?" These words were spoken by King Sejong, one of the most accomplished and beloved kings in Korea's history. While King Sejong initiated developments in creating music notations and a wide range of scientific inventions, he is most well known for creating Hangul, the Korean alphabet.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or expression in the language that you particularly like?

'실수에서 배우는 한, 실수를 해도 괜찮아요.'
When I was learning English as a foreigner, I made many mistakes using unfamiliar words and grammar.
Then, my teacher said, 'As long as you learn from this mistake, it's okay to make a mistake.'
Learning another language is very difficult.
This is because you have to learn the sentence structure, grammar, and words that you have used throughout your life in a new language.
So if you meet a teacher who comforts you when you make a mistake, corrects you to do better, and encourages you, it will not be too hard to learn a language.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Thankfully, recently more and more people are learning Korean to better understand K-Pop and Korean dramas, so it is important for me to use and teach Korean.
There may be so many reasons, but if students who learn Korean, for example, are fans of Korean celebrities, they will not want to miss out on subtle messages or cultural references while listening to them speak in Korean.
It is important for me to use this language to accurately explain and teach those linguistic differences.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

Korean, like all languages, is not easy to learn and use fluently.
It takes time, effort, failure, and persistence.
So, you have to ask yourself: What's your WHY? Constantly reminding yourself of you WHY will keep you on track in your studies and practice of the Korean language.
Is your reason to travel? To find a job? To study in Korea? To enjoy popular dramas and music? To find a partner? To reconnect with family?
Whatever your reason, keep it in the back of your mind and you will be able to overcome frustration and setbacks.
The difficulty of developing Korean proficiency also depends on if you already have a second language learning experience.
Studies have shown that people who acquire a second language are more likely to acquire additional languages.
And they can do so more easily.
This is partly because they know how to learn.
They have developed systems for studying and practicing languages that work for them.
They know their strengths and weaknesses, what to focus on, and how to study efficiently.
So if you are someone who can already speak another language, you have an advantage.
If Korean is your first foreign language, don't worry. Take some time to become familiar with effective study practices, and copy the techniques of others. This will get you started on the right foot.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

When I was doing my bachelor's degree, my professor took a tissue and put it in front of his mouth to explain the difference in air strength between double consonants and aspiration consonants. At that time, most students who lacked experience in teaching Korean to foreigners laughed at the professor's behavior.

When I became a teacher and taught students, I realized how difficult it was to explain the difference between double consonants and aspirations consonants in Korean, and I realized how intuitive the professor's explanation was. And I sometimes teach students by referring to the professor's explanation method.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

When teaching foreign and multicultural students at Korea's lifelong education centers, I had never tried to learn a second language, so I didn't realize that speaking a new language was so difficult.

I think I didn't know that it takes a lot of effort to speak English because the Korean education system only teaches English for exams.
After experiencing how desperately I have to try to learn English and communicate with foreigners while traveling in Australia, my teaching method changed more concisely and added many activities for students to participate in classes.
