About Andrew

Andrew Nguyen is a clarinetist known for his expressive sound and versatility in both orchestral and chamber music settings. Nguyen is Assistant Principal Clarinet and Utility Clarinet of the Peabody Symphony Orchestra and is a member of the Peabody Wind Ensemble and the Peabody Conductor’s Orchestra. Previously, Nguyen has served as Principal Bass Clarinet of the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music Wind Symphony and was a member of the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music Symphony Orchestra. Nguyen has also served as Principal Clarinet of the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music Opera Orchestra, performing The Marriage of Figaro under the direction of Andreas Mitisek in 2022.

In addition to his orchestral achievements, Nguyen has a deep passion for chamber music. He has performed chamber works ranging from works written during the 18th century to works written by living composers in the 21st century, including works written by composers of underrepresented backgrounds. In chamber settings, Nguyen has collaborated with musicians from the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the New York City Opera, and the Victoria Symphony in a variety of instrumentations, from a standard clarinet quintet to a quartet consisting of a percussionist, a harpist, a piccoloist, and a bass clarinetist. His performances have taken place in venues such as the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall, the Carpenter Performing Arts Center, and the Irvine Barclay Theatre in Southern California.

Nguyen has received training at the PRISMA Festival in British Columbia, Canada, the Zodiac Music Academy and Festival in Nice, France, and the Lawrence Chamber Music Festival in Appleton, Wisconsin. Nguyen has performed in masterclasses with clarinetists Michele Zukovsky, David Howard, Daniel Gilbert, Alain Desgagné, Shawn Copeland, and members of The U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own." In 2023, Nguyen was honored to be awarded as a winner of the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music Concerto Competition.

Nguyen is pursuing his Master of Music degree at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University. He received his Bachelor of Music degree at the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music of California State University, Long Beach, and his principal teachers include Alexander Fiterstein, Helen Goode-Castro, and Mathieu Girardet. In his free time, Nguyen enjoys roasting and brewing coffee, tending to his aquariums, and taking care of and playing with his pet dog, Cody, an Ausky mix.
