  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I speak Arabic fluently because it is my native language, and I have a deep connection to it culturally and linguistically. However, my passion for teaching it to non-native speakers was sparked by inspiring teachers who showed me the beauty of language education and intercultural exchange. Their influence motivated me to pursue a career in helping others understand and communicate in Arabic.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

One living figure I consider emblematic of Arabic culture is Naguib Mahfouz, the Nobel Prize-winning Egyptian author. His novels, like The Cairo Trilogy, beautifully capture the essence of Arab society, traditions, and the complexities of modernity. Through his storytelling, he bridges the gap between traditional and contemporary Arab culture, making his work universally relatable while preserving its deep cultural roots. He represents the rich literary heritage of the Arabic language and its ability to convey profound human experiences.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

One phrase in Arabic that I particularly like is 'في ميزان حسناتك' (fi meezaan hasanaatik), which translates to 'may it be added to the balance of your good deeds.' It's often said to someone who does a kind or charitable act. This phrase reflects the deep cultural and spiritual emphasis on gratitude, generosity, and the belief that good deeds have a lasting impact. It's a beautiful reminder of how intertwined language, values, and daily interactions are in Arabic culture.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Speaking Arabic matters to me because it is more than just a means of communication; it is a gateway to understanding a rich and diverse culture that spans centuries. The language carries the poetry of Al-Mutanabbi, the philosophy of Averroes, and the spiritual depth of the Qur'an. It connects millions of people across different countries and traditions. By teaching Arabic, I feel I'm contributing to building bridges between cultures and helping others discover the beauty and depth of this language.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

The main difficulty in learning Arabic is mastering its complex grammar and script, particularly for non-native speakers. For example, the root system, verb conjugations, and the distinctions between spoken dialects and Modern Standard Arabic can be challenging. Additionally, the script requires learners to familiarize themselves with a new writing system, including its cursive style and the absence of short vowels in most texts.
To help with the learning process, I emphasize consistent exposure and practice through interactive methods like conversations, storytelling, and cultural immersion. Breaking the language into manageable steps, using authentic materials, and fostering a supportive learning environment can make the journey more enjoyable and effective. Patience and practice are key!
6)Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.
During my school days, one of my teachers used a unique method to teach us the richness of the Arabic language. He would take a single root word and show us how it transformed into dozens of meanings just by changing the pattern or adding a prefix or suffix. For example, from the root 'ك-ت-ب' (k-t-b), we explored kitab (book), maktab (desk/office), and maktaba (library).

This not only helped me appreciate the language's logical structure but also inspired me to view Arabic as a living, evolving system of connections. It's a method I now use with my own students, and it's always rewarding to see their excitement when they realize the same depth and flexibility.
7)How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?
Traveling to different Arabic-speaking countries has been invaluable in deepening my understanding of the language and its cultural nuances. One memorable trip was to Egypt, where I immersed myself in the vibrant spoken dialect. Conversing with locals, from taxi drivers to market vendors, taught me expressions and idioms that don't always appear in textbooks.

This experience reinforced the importance of understanding both Modern Standard Arabic and regional dialects. It also showed me how language is deeply tied to culture, as even the simplest phrases carry a warmth and hospitality unique to each region. Such experiences have enriched my teaching by allowing me to share real-world language use with my students.
8)What makes you a Superprof in language?
What makes me a Superprof in language is my deep passion for both teaching and the Arabic language itself. As a native speaker and a dedicated educator, I combine a solid understanding of Arabic grammar, syntax, and vocabulary with an awareness of the challenges that non-native speakers face. I adapt my lessons to each student's learning style, using interactive techniques like real-life conversations, storytelling, and multimedia to make the language accessible and enjoyable.

Additionally, my experience working with students from various cultural backgrounds has honed my ability to create a supportive and motivating learning environment. I am committed to helping my students not just learn Arabic, but truly appreciate the culture and the beauty behind it.
