Some pupils and students, having difficulties in school, may still be struggling while receiving home tutoring lessons. To face this problem, including games in the classic school curriculum could prove to be an effective learning tool for the success of these children.

While at least 40% of pupils and students in London receive home tutoring lessons from private educators, the national average is closer to 10%, or around 280,000. This "shadow education" is estimated to be worth 2 billion pounds a year and at least 43% of state school teachers say that they have offered private tuition within the last year.

Interviewed by The Independent in 2016, Sir Peter Lampl, chairman of the Sutton Trust and the Education Endowment Foundation, said: “Private tuition is widespread and increasingly so. Nearly half of teachers have tutored and a quarter of teenagers have been tutored. But with costs of at least £25 per session, many cannot afford to benefit from this extra support, which exacerbates education inequalities."

With reports that the percentage of graduates employment is the highest it has ever been since 1989, with only 5.7% of British graduates being unemployed, many parents are ready to spend a fair bit of money to help their children succeed in school.

Given how well the private tutoring market is doing, it is not surprising to know that competition is tough. As a private tutor, it will be important to be the best possible and including playful educational games in your lessons will make you stand apart.

Here are a few ideas on how to include learning games for kids in your lessons, from preschool kids to secondary school students.

What Are The Benefits Of Educational Games For Kids?

Giving extra scholar lessons to kids is an excellent way to prevent any difficulties a child might encounter in school. From kindergarten learning activities to secondary school home tutoring, parents often use educators outside the regular school system to strengthen any learning gaps their child might have.

However in the crucial first years of primary schools, from Year 1 to Year 3, an extracurricular push might not be sufficient.

Some students may have difficulties to follow the rhythm of the normal school curriculum

PISA, the Programme for International Student Assessment, published by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), assesses the level of education of 72 countries.

According to the data, some 22% of 15-year-olds in the UK do not reach Level 2 - the baseline level of achievement - which means they cannot solve problems "routinely faced by adults in their daily lives".

The UK has also ranked 21st for reading, despite having around 15% of "functionally illiterate" adults (meaning that they would not pass en English GCSE and have a literacy level below those expected of an 11-year-old).

These results are coherent with the ones from European neighbours and is often explained by the inequity of the education system.

If the National curriculum does not always work, why not try homeschool learning games to thwart the chances of a child dropping out of school?

Learning games for kids include a social parameter and each pupil, through his or her experience, will get to experiment and discover different worlds.

A learning game can be individual or interpersonal, physical or sensorial, based on cooperation or communication, all playful games and activities help with improving a child's school results.

Primary school is the time to build the foundation of future success for your child.

Why is that?

Because, through interactive learning games, each kid will get to explore a different world, build his or her own mental representations, create the matching neuronal connection, all that without being placed under the restraints of the classic school schemes with its rigid schedule and lessons.

Through cooperation games between a teacher and its students, being in one on one session or in class, students can learn how to take decision collectively, respect and solidarity.

A teaching game (often free and spontaneous, triggering the imagination and creativity), an educational game (following a specific learning goal) and a pedagogic game all aim to associate fun to school and homework.

Games are crucial to help with any gaps in the education of kids that are struggling in school.

In modern education, games are often offered to preschoolers, but it usually stops as soon as primary school starts. Yet, playing allows keeping the learner engaged and motivating kids to learn.

Playing will increasing children's focus and memorisation. While completing interactive exercises, the child, active in the process, will discover its role and its responsibility in winning or in helping his or her team to win.

Playing to gain a work methodology lessens the stress induced by mistakes and failures,  a huge factor in the psychology of children struggling in school.

Preschool Games For Toddlers

Riddles, puzzles, coloring, card games, drawing, painting, music and group games are all good for homeschool education.

Inspired by the Montessori method, the playful education implies a very scholastic approach: our Superprof educators will adapt their lessons to the grade, age and level of the students they're helping.

Our tutors often offer various methods to help very young children:

  • Geometric colourful shapes and pattern carpet to stimulate visual memory
  • Balls and balloons to learn about shapes, textures, numbers, etc.
  • Multicolour rainbows, used in the Montessori and Steiner-Waldorf methods, those help kids to learn about colours, piling up, sorting, dissociating, dimensions, etc.
  • Russian dolls used to develop  motor skills and autonomy
  • Sound boxes that help to stimulate all five senses
  • Musical instruments, teaching a child to learn how to play the piano or the guitar enhance concentration, cognitive skills and creativity
  • Mirrors, a very important learning tool, they will help with self-awareness and space representation

There are a lot of different teaching methods out there to help with extra-scholar education support, spanning from pre-school to university. One of the main limiting factors for many parents will remain the cost of such private tutored classes.

However, learning through play guided by a home tutor will give a kid a much better learning experience, even if you use online teaching resources.

Prevent Education Shortfall As Early As Possible

Offering a private tutor to preschoolers might seem excessive and in most cases, home lessons will really get to be useful when primary school begins.

In primary school, children will have to learn how to solve mathematical problems and will learn how to read in their first English class.

Games are often used to perfect the assimilation of some school knowledge: kids learn to sing the alphabet as it is one of the best ways to memorise it.

Games often disregarded as useless, will strengthen skills and knowledge in science and literature (problem-solving skills, geometry,  math skills including counting, addition and subtraction, multiplication and fraction as well as history and geography, language skills, physics, etc.)

For example, in order to learn how to add, a teacher might use a simple math game use fruits like apples, bananas and oranges with two napkins and give the following instructions to the children:

  • Put all apples on one napkin
  • Put all bananas on the other napkin
  • How many pieces of fruit are on napkins? The teacher counts each piece of fruit one by one out loud.
  • The teacher traces a + sign between both napkins symbolising the addition "2 apples + 2 bananas = 4 fruits"
  • The teacher will then point out that children just performed an addition
  • How to add the other fruits?
  • The teacher traces a + sign to point out that it signifies an addition

For private English lessons, children can be initiated to everyday life vocabulary spelling using dice, card games, the hangman game or a simple puzzle with letters.

For example, using online apps and exercises can be used by kids to learn to read time, describe clothes or assimilate conjugation.

The educational follow up using recreational activities uses positive reinforcement to strengthen kids self-confidence and to put them at ease with every subject they have to learn in school.

"Grades don't measure tenacity, courage, leadership, guts or whatever you want to call it. Teachers or any other persons in a position of authority should never tell anybody they will not succeed because they did not get all A's in school." - Thomas J. Stanley, American writer and business theorist

Using Online Educational Games Once In Secondary School

Most of the private tuition that UK children receive happen during the secondary education cycle, from Year 7 to Year 13 and aim at getting pupils ready for their GCSE and A-level exams.

How can you make instruction at that level fun and engaging?

The secondary education cycle, which includes the Key Stage of education 3 to 5, from the age of 12 to 18 years old, is a pivotal period in the learning journey of pupils and some extra lessons may sometimes be necessary for children to avoid falling being the rest of the classroom.

Here are a few school support websites giving children kids that will both entertain and educate them.
