About Alan

Hi! Alan here! Hope you’re well and safe!

I have been playing and teaching the Flute for over 25 years. Now at 43, I divide my time between the career of Flute/Recorder Teacher and Orchestral Player. Besides being FATHER of a beautiful 9 year-old, Maria Flor.
Coming from a MUSICAL FAMILY on both father and mother sides, I began my musical studies at the Recorder at the age of 11, and the Flute at 12. At 17, I was already teaching at my father's Music school where I began my career as a Music teacher.
I graduated as a MUSIC TECHNICIAN at the "Maestro Fego Carmago" Arts Conservatory, Brazil and a MUSIC BACHELOR with Honors at the Colchester Institute of Music in England, UK.
As a performer, I have played and performed as a SOLOIST in England and Brazil and also traveled to France for the project "500 ans d'amitié Brésil et France" where I performed in many different cities across France. I have also WON TWO COMPETITIONS while at University: 2005 Woodwind Soloist, and the 2005 Duet Competition with the talented flutist Amy Little.

The number one pilar of my methodology is:
To set goals directly based on the songs and styles that the student wants to play.

That can be playing Flute pop/folk covers, jazz and improvisation, classical repertoire or school band pieces.

It can also be technical goals such as improving sound, faster fingers, better posture, or playing with a vibrato like a singer.

To help you achieve that in the shortest amount of time I have created 5 different learning modules. Which of them will teach you different techniques through a special selection of methods and books that I personally compiled over the years. Whenever you conquer a Module, you will received a Certificate of achievement to boost your motivation.

Now let’s answer some questions you might have:

- Who do I teach?
Adults and Children from 6 to 96!

- How long have I been teaching for?
I have been teaching for over 25 years. PRIVATE TEACHING IS MY MAIN CAREER as a professional.

- Which Instruments do I teach?
The Flute, the Piccolo Flute and the Recorder.

- Which Levels?
From very beginning, ZERO KNOWLEDGE, to intermediate-advanced players.

- For what purposes?
As a HOBBY, for SCHOOL BANDS, GRADING TESTS or for AUDITIONS for Music Schools and Orquestras.

- Which styles do I teach?
Classical, Popular, Folk, Jazz, Latin and Funk.

- Which subjects are included in my lessons?
Music Theory, MUSIC READING, Music Harmony and IMPROVISATION.

- Where do I teach?
I am international Teacher, tutoring students from all over the world.
All my lesson are online via FACETIME or GOOGLE MEETING.
ALL LESSONS CAN BE RECORDED by the student and be rewatched as many time as they wish.

- Why would you choose to have Flute Lessons online?
It’s SAFER, TIME SAVING, very CONVENIENT and COMFORTABLE.

- How do I teach? That is, what’s is my methodology?
My focus is entirely on specific SONGS, GOALS AND STYLE THE STUDENT MAY WANT TO LEARN. It may be something he/she enjoys mostly or something she/he needs to learn for School Band or a for a family performance for example.
The Student will have a PRACTICE LOG DOCUMENT where I’ll place information about what we talked and learnt in each lesson and what to during the week up to the next lesson.
The student will also have his own PRIVATE SHARED FOLDER where I’ll be placing all song’s sheet music and any extra material such as Scales, presentations and Study Method Books.
Last but not least, the student will have a PERSONAL PLANS AND GOALS DOCUMENT where I will be writing the topics to be learnt and goals to be achieved for the next months.
I’ll be always watching the student’s development very closely, giving ALL THE SUPPORT NEEDED for a steady and, most importantly, much fun learning.

- What can I teach my students?
Among uncountable topics I can teach my students, I’ll list 5 IMPORTANT PILLARS:
1. PROPER POSTURE: how to hold the Flute/Recorder in an easy but very stable manner keeping the body erect but relaxed. The bones hold the body up, not the muscles! So, relax and enjoy!
2. LONG LASTING BREATH: I’ll work on how filling up the body more deeply with air using abdominal, also know as, diaphragmatic breathing. But most importantly, the student will learn how to use it in a more efficient way, working on air direction, air intensity and also the shape of the mouth a.k.a. embouchure.
3. EASY GOING FINGERS: The finger must be light and near the keys/holes, relaxed and fluent! Scales, effective exercises and visualizations will get us there. Trust me!
4. FAST AND EFFICIENT SHEET MUSIC READING: Music reading is all about thinking ahead! With progressive exercises, a good Study Method and my accompaniment (and the student’s practice!) anyone can be the master of Music reading with me!
5. MUSICALITY: How to develop technically in a Musical instrument but do not sound like a MIDI music reader from the 80’s? I’ll work very simple and beautiful melodic lines either from pieces or exercises, to inbuilt the habit of playing anything musically in the student, from scales to full concertos or improvisational section.

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favorite instrument?

I come from a musical family, so music has been a passion of mine. When I turned 11, I started to learn the recorder in Musicianship and Band classes at school. A few months later, I was watching television on a typical day, when suddenly I saw something that just enchanted me. It was a musician playing this transverse instrument that shone like the most beautiful stars. That's when I fell in love with the flute.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

Definitely! I basically love all styles of music from Classical to Pop. However, my heart really gives it in for Classical and Jazz. J.S. Bach and A.W. Mozart simply take me somewhere else when I listen to their art. In Jazz, Miles Davis and Bill Evans are my great idols.
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

Usually on the flute, things start to get more difficult when we begin to talk about tone colors. Tone colors mean purposely changing your sound to express new feelings and abstract ideas of colors in music as in painting. At the same time, this subject is so beautiful and compelling that none escape from giving their best to master it.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

The flute of course!! Since it's the most beautiful one…lol! The difficult part about the flute is that our embouchure works in a similar way to the violin fingering: any slight change will affect the sound quality, pitch, volume and timbre. But answering the question more seriously, there is no instrument harder to play than the violin itself. Extremely complex fingerings, double stops, and bowing techniques are just the beginning of this very challenging instrument.
  • What are your keys to success?

We can love what we do, but in reality, to strive for success only discipline can take you there. Discipline never has to be something negative. There are many tricks that we can use daily to motivate us to practice every day. I love sharing with my students articles about these things. In sum, for success, I aim to strive for discipline, motivation and self-awareness.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favorite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

#3 Pat Metheny. The greatest Jazz Guitar Player. His energy when improvising is so captivating and full of expressiveness. I would love to get to know how he sees music and life.

#2 James Galway. Revolutionary Classical Flutist. Galway is an inspiration to all of us. Always in a very funny and friendly mood, I'd love to ask him real questions about devotion and passion for flute playing.

#1 Number one is none other than, Hilary Hahn. American Top Classical Violinist. Hilary is known for her rich sound and incredible sensibility for phrasing besides being an extremely humble person. Talking to her about music in general and how to be happy with our career would be a gift to me.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

When I was a younger flutist, I had the habit of disassembling my flute for cleaning. On one occasion with the tube totally "naked", without any key or mechanism on, I noticed that it was a little crooked and decided to straighten it on my KNEE!! It went down very badly, the flute bent in a V shape and I got really desperate! Luckily, I found great technicians who managed to bring it back in shape! After that, I never dismantled another flute again! lol…
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I simply love both people and music. It's such an incredible art.
For that reason, I find it extremely profound to teach music to a human being. As a teacher, I am always aiming to be very patient and caring with my pupils. Since private teaching is my main job and career, there is always a special touch of devotion and passion in all my lessons.
