The simple and effective answer to your questions is not in debating or learning theories, but to try out things in person as the work environment/conditions will always not be the same, and also you will always not get the exact same tools of your choice every time.
Learning from your mistakes will make you experienced enough to decide what slight changes and modifications you need to make a thing work :)
I have been interested in this since a very long time, and had been developing my skills over the years, in contrary to an overnight hit idea.This makes me experienced enough to try out a greater variety of genres, and how to make slight variations to them by adding some subtle flavours from other genres.
I do have some quick and no-timer arrangement hacks, but those didn't came overnight, I had to do and see if things were working or not.

> A decent enough Laptop(atleast i3 4th gen and 4GB DDR3) to run the DAW
> Decent enough dedicated Headphones(for this purpose, and not any extra bass, or crappy ones)
