About Matthew
My passion for teaching began in my early teens when I became a Senior Cadet Instructor for the Army Cadet Force, my first lesson was Map and Land Navigation where I immediately fell in love with imparting knowledge and watching my students grow. Since then I have taught thousands of young people through work as an activity instructor and later in schools and youth centres as a youth worker. Working with challenging young people comes naturally and working with enthusiastic learners is always a pleasure.
Some of the subjects I have taught in my career include (not exclusive):
Map and Land Navigation
Weapon Safe-handling
Drill (weapons and non-weapons)
Other military subjects
Music (guitar and recording)
Climbing and High Ropes
Archery
Team and Leadership Skills
Problem Solving
English in Action (English as a Foreign Language)
Animation
Computer Game Making
Quad Biking
Drug, Alcohol and Sex Education
Transition projects (into secondary school)
Healthy Eating and Nutrition
My career has also included several roles in an advice and guidance capacity, helping young people to make great life choices and choose the best course of action when in crisis. I don't just teach my subject; I do my best to impart wisdom over knowledge enabling the student to reach their full potential in wider areas.

A bright and enthusiastic mature student experienced with instruction in a plethora of subjects both in school and in the outdoor activity industry. Willing to teach enthusiastic or challenging people up to level 3 (A-level), individuals or small groups (up to 5).
Teachers have described my style as pedagogic, adaptive and easy to understand and my personality as friendly, caring and approachable while always willing to go that extra-mile to achieve great results.
Lessons can be structured to best fit your timetable, and focused to achieve maximum results in a minimum time through in-direct or informal testing and use of great on-line tools.
The role of a teacher, in my own opinion is less imparting knowledge, more instilling a willingness and enthusiasm for the subject. If a student wants to learn they will learn of their own accord (with a little guidance), if they do not it can really be a struggle. This is why I take the approach of getting to know the young person and what makes them tick, while exploring what it is the student will really find useful and engaging about the subject.

It seems like a lifetime ago now but, when my eldest was around 7 or 8, Matthew helped my daughter get into learning to play the guitar. She was doing surprisingly well at it through infant school but sadly she grew out of the phase. It isn't IT related, but a person's way of teaching will remain the same regardless as to the subject. I remember as I listened to them both from the kitchen that I was pleasantly surprised at how patient he was with her and he had this natural ability to be able to break down something that was already quite simple seeming to himself to make it even easier for a younger person to understand. I also remember her making great use of the written instructions/ diagram he did for her. Being able to explain something verbally and in written form is a great ability for a teacher/tutor to have as some people may understand one way better than another. And Matt has that ability. He has told me since that helping my daughter was the first time he'd tried to teach someone something which tells me he's a natural at it. :)
